NFL should definitely copy this, but never will.

Agreed.

I also think the NFL is being wholly lazy in not implementing 10 year old technology to perfectly place the balls.  There is no reason for a 65 year old man to be sprinting down the sideline trying to evaluate where a punt went out of bounds, or for two 65 year old men to be holding MF'ing sticks tied together with 30 feet of chain.

It's downright stupid...but here we are.

At the end of the day it's a league controlled almost entirely by a group of older ridiculously wealthy men living in bygone eras.

The fact that these shenanigans continue should be of no surprise to anyone honestly.

I would love it but the NFL and networks would rather go to commercial and make that money.

FWIW, you can sell the sponsorship of the segment and still make that money, maybe not as much, but definitely some back.  The liberty Mutual replay booth, or the pepsi replay booth, whatever you wanna call it.

True, but the fans can push change, we are just perfectly fine keeping it the way "it's always been".

Until football starts really losing fans (I think this has started) there is very little reason to get outside of their comfort zones.

I'm not against using tracking technology to pin down things like where a ball goes out of bounds, crossing the plane and through the uprights.  Basically plays that end in a dead ball.

I think it goes too far when you try to use it to measure forward progess.  For things like that, the location of the ball isn't really as relevant as where the runner is when he is down.  Tracking tech can't determine that and it shouldn't.

Even crossing the plane is a little scary, because the tech can only say the ball crossed the plane, not where the runner was when it did relevant to down by contact or still alive.

Yeah, I guess like goal line tech in soccer.

Personally, and I know I'm an outlier for sure, but I prefer a little less "perfection" in sport. I like that the officiating is an imperfect element that informs the narrative of contests - just like the imperfect players and coaches.

If we continue down the road that we've started walking on - the road of expecting to get every thing exactly right (an impossibility anyway), we may as well just run digital simulations instead of on-field competition.

I agree with you. It gets to a point where computers are more important than the actual players.

It’s similar to the Astros and the sign stealing tech. Yes, the argument could be made that stealing signs has gone on forever, but it’s not the same when a computer is analyzing a camera feed and relaying it to a player who did nothing to get the info. The competition goes away.

I despise the imperfection in the sport. It’s supposed to be a contest between teams to see which is best. There shouldn’t be outside influences on the results. I’m all for everything to remove the gd “human element” that makes an uneven playing field.

There is no sport without the human element.

I like the idea that plays are reviewed in the booth but you want to show it just once a game so the tv audience can see how it works. Did FOX or ABC show them? I had the games on but not paying close attention. The problem is that the networks do not employ all the cameras that would be needed in most NFL games. They go cheap. The game of the week, Sunday, Monday night have the cameras. I don't think even Thursday night has all the cameras. And sh!t happens like bad weather. Our home TB game had ONE camera after the delay. I will tell you to my dying day that CMC might not have had a td but he did make the 1st down which would have given us 4 more chances for a td. No goal line or sideline or skycam camera to review. But I sat 11 rows up from that goal line and saw it as clear as day.

What I do really like is that there are speakers in the WR and RB helmets too. Just a quick loose huddle to let the lineman know the formation. That would help Cam especially now that Olsen won't be in the huddle to help. And 3 defense men with speakers is cool too.

I said the human element that makes an uneven playing field. The only human element should be the teams, not the rules and their enforcement.

The idea of an "even playing field" is absurd on its premise. Genetic differences alone make it an impossibility. But you can go as deep down the rabbit hole as you like.

And if we just look at the results of attempting to achieve perfect adjudication from what we've already seen, it is just a mess. We've scrutinized the definition of a catch until no one seemed to even know what a catch was any longer. And pass interference will *never* be free of controversy. There is inevitably going to be some subjective judgment to things in a game played by human beings.

Things don't always get more clear the closer you lean in to examine. They often get more fuzzy.

Aside from those issues, I think mistakes add color to the narrative of sport. Just look at the Saints with the PI issue. What drama! Not that we shouldn't have officials who do their best, but sometimes in sport you get screwed, and sport is a really nice metaphor for life oftentimes. Let's celebrate the mess. (of both)

    • Who mentioned anything about money? I said they are bad people. When you have that kind of power you tend to be a jerk. It's common that most rich people think they are above everyone else.   It's why these owners always get caught up in some scandal. There are more than we know about trust me. Some pay off people to keep quiet. Hell we already dealt with it with JR. My issue is not with their wealth. My issue is what that wealth brings which can be some evil tendencies...
