The question is are we trying to compete? If we are and we are no longer content with being the doormat of the NFCS (1-5 in the division last year) then let's fuging go. I'm onboard. If we are tanking, fug no I do not want to pay anyone a record breaking contract. I don't care how handsome they are or how many fans fawn over him.

The answer is, yes, to a certain extent.

Unless we go after a top QB this year (I don't expect that to happen), I think the plan is to strip it down, try to put a competitive young team out there, and still get a top QB next draft.

Personally I'm more of a burn it down, acquire as many picks and cap room as possible, and build this thing correctly, but I think that Tepper wants to build it right, and win some along the way.

I don't agree with paying CMC this offseason, but I understand why Tepper would want to....I didn't agree with Shaq getting signed either, but here we are.

You're absolutely right that the situation is different. It's different because very few NFL teams currently are experiencing thriving success by paying one running back a kings ransom. They just aren't winning by forcing the ball through one back. The 49ers use multiple backs, and the Chiefs dropped Kareem Hunt who was at the time the best RB in the league like a hot potato. Last I checked they just won the Super Bowl with Damien Williams and LeSean McCoy in the backfield.

Have you looked up the RB salary numbers?

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/average/running-back/#

Come back and tell me the combined record of the top 6 teams with the running backs making the highest salary.

BTW. Get a real nice look at where Mostert and Williams are on that list.

Ok? There’s only 4 guys making over $10M. It’s not exactly a large sample and the Jets are morons. How about the fact that KC is paying over $40M to two WRs and a TE? 5 of the top 10 WRs didn’t sniff the playoffs.

Look at the QBs. Mahomes, Watson, Jackson and Allen are way cheaper than Jimmy G who’s team got as far as they did almost in spite of his mediocre throws.

Also, LOL at Mostert. Do you really think he’s talented or do you think SF’s OL and coach are really solid in the running game?

You can find almost every scenario you want in looking at salary tables. Reasons to put QBs and to draft and build around rookies, etc. You aren’t proving anything other than KC pays its offensive weapons and on our team that would mean paying CMC and Moore.

Barry Sanders did what he did behind what was mostly a sh-t offensive line. People always ask what could have been if he'd had the blocker Emmitt Smith had.

Now imagine McCaffrey with a solid offensive line.

Yep. It’s silly. I can find a salary to make any argument I want. The point is that teams pay their primary weapons. We are in a passing league so WRs tend to get our more. A guy like CMC getting 100+ receptions seems like the style of RB you consider a weapon. He’s young and a weapon so I’m considering him part of the plan. I don’t care if Freeman, Bell, Gurley and Johnson are overpaid. Johnson shocks me the most. His injuries really did take a toll. He was unbelievable a couple years ago, looked like an amazing weapon.

I'm always bugged by the idea that there's a set way to do things and not do them.

Teams have taken many different paths to winning a Super Bowl. Likewise, teams that have copied others' winning methods have met with abject failure. It's just not that simple.

Just because something is trendy in the league doesn't mean it's right for us.

That deleted tweet is interesting.

I'm curious though what part of the "process" involves potentially making our current starting running back the highest paid at his position in the midst of a rebuild.

Because you have to pay someone. Might as well be the one who can't single handedly win us games. While still keeping a few azzes in the seats. (Not that by any means do I agree with it)

Records that would never be broken. Barry was unreal. He made extremely gifted athletes look silly. I can’t remember who it was, but a Pro Bowl caliber linebacker that had to face him regularly once said “Trying to tackle Barry Sanders is like trying to tackle water.”

If they go full on tank mode and win like 2-3 games next year, Ruhle won’t make it three years here.

We go full on jaguar mode with an owner that has no idea what hes doong but a lot of money to make a bunch of changes

All signs from league sources indicate the team will draft a signal-caller—either Justin Herbert or Tua Tagovailoa—in the first round, but within the last three days there have been a number of unsolicited calls and texts about a trade for Cam Newton.

The guy who wrote this BR article was on the radio yesterday.

To clarify, he was the one who was receiving unsolicited calls and texts about a Cam/Chargers trade. As in, "Have you heard anything about Cam going to the Chargers?"
