Maybe not a franchise QB, but Jake the Snake was fun to watch when he was on. The Arizona debacle is hard to forget but that's on Panthers management for putting him in that position knowing the possibilities after that surgery. Besides, Jake's suckage toward the end made way for Jimmy Clausen who navigated us to the first overall to take Cam Newton. The universe has a way of working itself out.

He had a really great run for someone at his level for a bit but yes, he was a lot like what you see currently from Kirk Cousins in my opinion.  Has solid overall seasons, some really memorable moments, but overall, just not a franchise runner.

When he passed his prime, the dip was tremendous and JR+Hurney kept doing JR+Hurney things.

Most reecently:

A completely depleted Joe Flacco netted a 4th rounder last year.

Jimmy G for a 2nd rounder.

Tannehill was for a 6th round pick.

Let's say Cam is medically cleared but the team wants to ship him.  I'd realistically see a 2nd and 5th type combo.  The risk/reward with him will keep the value high.  That injury uncertainty just doesn't net us a 1st.

Then the question is: Are the assets we would acquire are worth shipping him off for vs. just seeing if he still has it?

IMO, if we're netting 2 potential starters in the 2020 draft (or maybe 2021) in reciprocation, then we may be moving on.

Yes 2009 was an obvious tank job by JR in all aspects. I don’t understand why some on here don’t get that’s what it takes to get players like Newton. Tanking this year wouldn’t be a bad thing if he moves and doesn’t play on a one year deal.

Your theory on the direction of the team has WAY more moving parts and gambles to it than mine does. Teams with great offenses have been winning with average to below average defenses. As long as your defense can generate turnovers and give your high powered offense a chance at success that's all you really need in today's game. Rarely do teams finish top 5 or even top 10 rather in offense AND defense. We are now an offensive team. Keep Cam rebuild the oline patch together a defense and bring in some young athletic playmakers/FA's over the next 2 years and we are ready to compete. You are talking about possibly sacrificing the entirety of Matt Rhule's existence off of 1 single move, and that move is moving on from Cam before we can see if this arrangement can work.

We can either trade Cam or release him. If we trade him we will likely only get a 3rd round pick, that being generous for an oft injured running Qb as you've stated. If we release him the highest "comp" pick we can get is also a 3rd rounder. A 3rd round pick(A Marty Hurney 3rd round pick BTW) for Cam Newton before seeing what he can do in Joe Brady's offense is NOT WORTH it, it just isn't. So with that being said we will just have to agree to disagree.

KC was down 10 with 6 minutes left. If Jimmy G makes one throw or they call a run on 2nd and 5 and all of a sudden we’d see a lot more defense and running games win championships. It’s comical. First, Cam’s not Mahomes and won’t get there if he’s healthy. Second, our 2015 #1 scoring offense barely had more points than our #31 scoring defense of 2019. Pair them and we are 8-8 or 9-7, not even a playoff team. People are trying to act like KC’s defense was similar to ours. The Chiefs gave up 308 points. SF gave up 310. That was #7 and #8, not quite “average.” Acquiring Frank Clark and Matthieu isn’t exactly going all in on offense. That’s said were #31 and gave up 470 points, so we gave up 10 points more per game. Even though I have more moving parts, you actually think we can score 10 more points per game than KC? I don’t so let’s not be naive that we can go all in on offense. I’m proposing something that should get us to a good offense and also be able to add  a Clark and Matthieu or even more.

You act like KC did all of that in one season. They've been building this core for a period of 2-3 seasons, if you look back at 2018 the Chiefs were ranked 24th in PPG and improved to #7 this season. We aren't going to be superbowl bound with Cam or without him next season. And we can sit here and talk about hypothetical situations all day long if you like.

The fact of the matter is WE have never seen Cam paired with an innovative offensive minded staff and surrounded him with weapons to succeed. He's carried this offense and this team ALONE for 9 seasons. You say Cam will never put up the numbers Mahomes has, well you are probably right he won't. For the simple fact that it has taken 9 seasons to finally put a decent offense around our Franchise Quarterback. Give Mahomes Ted Ginn Jr. as his #1 WR for the 2019 season (Cam's #1 for his MVP season) do you still think he has the same passing stats as he had this year? Yea fuging right. What about an over weight Kelvin Benjamin as Mahomes #1 WR? An old injury prone J. Stew as his top back. And a Byron Bell/Nate Chandler OT duo. I can sit here and talk hypotheticals as well. We have never surrounded Cam with offensive talent like Mahomes has been blessed with in KC. So it is actually HILARIOUS you try and compare the two without taking into account the environments both players have played in.

Lol, don’t take this all so personal. KC built for way more than 2-3 years but they got rid of Smith who had led them to multiple years of playoff trips. They realized that they could do better with Mahomes and with his rookie deal they were able to extend Hill and Fisher and pay Watkins, Matthieu and Clark. Love Cam, but if we keep going with him we aren’t adding all the pieces you think and we won’t be a contender. We can’t afford to pay Cam $30-40M a year and field a competitive team.

If we pay Cam, it would be like KC in 2019 without Clark and Matthieu and worse pieces. Your plan honestly has as many moving parts and assumptions (Cam’s health) but it has less picks and a lot less cap space. I’d bet on my plan based on the 2021 QBs just based on better chances. Don’t get emotional about one player.
