Baylor's Sean Padden hired as VP of Football Operations

Wow.

Padden's name was mentioned a long time ago. It was expected he'd be part of the franchise, but I was thinking it'd be as some sort of assistant to Rhule. Didn't really see him getting a vice president title.

NFL job descriptions are very fluid. With that said, this is an executive level position being given to someone who has no NFL experience even as a low-level assistant.

It's kind of a head scratcher

This whole all in on Rhule thing is going to be a huge success or a spectacular failure IMO. I just don't see much of a chance for anything in between. Total boom or bust.

Marty Hurney's continued heavy involvement causes me tremendous pause.

Tepper banked on Hurney. We are fugged.

There were three Baylor names mentioned during the hiring process that up till recently hadn't been confirmed. Padden (former Assistant AD) was one, assistant to the head Coach Matt Delgado (former director of football technology) was another,.

Baylor offensive analyst D J Mangas was the third. Still haven't heard anything on him, and at this point probably won't.

Still kinda wondering what happened with Damiere Shaw.

I thought W/L record was the only thing that mattered in evaluating GMs? I know I've heard that an awful lot in these discussions.

It depends. If your team is 3-13 and clearly bad then 4 and 5 win seasons while dropping salary and rebuilding through the draft is expected. When you are 11-5 and had been in the playoffs 4 out of the last 5 years, going 7-9 and 5-11 isn’t a good result especially when you are now rebuilding when you weren’t expect to rebuild.

Record isn’t as important if you’re starting from scratch. It is important when you took over a team that goes to the playoffs.

FYI: This is the title that Andrew Berry had in Philadelphia before getting named Browns GM.

It's also pretty close to the title Mike Borgonzi holds in Kansas City and Omar Khan has in Pittsburgh. Kevin Abrams holds the title in New York and is also listed as the Assistant GM.
