REPORT! Panthers GM Marty Hurney "refused to answer several" questions about Cam Newton’s future with the team.

The teams refusal to commit to Cam is significant. You don’t do this to a “franchise QB”.

He may end up staying but it is clear they are thinking of moving on.

There’s no chance Hurney would commit to anything without knowing how Cam’s foot is going to hold up. Not going to know that while he’s still in rehab. Hurney saying the only thing that makes sense at this point doesn’t make anything clear at all. It is completely lacking in any indication whatsoever.

This is a non statement, but I think the point is that Hurney understands the speculation surrounding Cam and did not make an effort to clear it up---what he does not say could be telling.  "He is rehabbing (a fact that cannot be disputed.)  That is all I can say."

No it is not.  He is under contract through 2020.  You could say that he is the starting QB and he is getting ready for next year.  He is our starter...etc.  If "he is rehabbing" is all you can say, then what you can't say speaks volumes.

Now compare what Marty just said about Cam to what he said about Peppers in 2009, when Peppers was begging for a trade:

"We've known Julius for seven years, and it has been a good seven years," Hurney said. "I think he knows how we feel, and we feel like he's been happy here. And again, nothing has changed. We franchised him, and when we did, we knew there was a period for the process to take place. When that process goes through, then he's going to be back."

Can we detect a different tone?

You can read into whatever you want but again until he is fully healthy no decision will be made. What you can read into it is that he isn't healthy and he is getting better.  He said last year that Cam was the starter when he was healthy and you see how that worked out. Keeping everything close to the vest seemed pretty wise at this juncture.

It’s entirely possible Hurney doesn’t have the power to decide if Cam is returning and if so, then that really is all he can say.

I’m certain Rhule has more say than Hurney over it

Usually the GM gets the players the coach wants, not the other way around.

He's in the last year of his contract after coming off two seasons worth of injuries.

He hasn't taken the field for full workouts.

What else is he supposed to say?

Let's be honest, it's really been 4 years of injuries. He didn't finish 2016 because of the shoulder and we weren't even sure if he was going to start week 1 of 2017. Remember how bad his arm looked the first couple weeks of 2017? He finished 2017, but his first shoulder surgery was after the 2016 season. He hasn't finished 3 of the last 4 years. 2015 was the last truly healthy year for Cam.

I know there's a lot of people who don't like anyone saying anything bad about Cam (even if true), but his injury history since 2016 is my biggest concern with extending Cam. I'd be shocked if he goes into 2020 in his last year of this contract and extending him could be a boat anchor if he can't stay healthy.

Not always.  Carroll definitely has more power than Schneider for example.

Rhule is our guy, there’s a reason we are looking for an “assistant” GM

its like last year when cam's camp said he was ready to play - but he wasn't.   now cam and his camp are saying he'll be back, but the team is not.  i think the writing is on the wall and he's gone no matter what.  but maybe he's just gone if we know we can get the qb we want in the draft.  idk but this is def something.   this isn't how you talk about your qb if he's your qb.    this is still the first time cam isn't in the drivers seat and its weird, but i think good for the franchise.   it needs to be bigger than cam.   we'll see what happens.   i doubt tepper is happy about the video confessing he hid injuries, the reports he was ready to play after the bye, or cam saying he's coming back.   it seems like cam still thinks he has the leverage he use to, but he doesn't.

Hence the use of usually. If itI were always  it would say so. The use of assistant GM is to break the duties up between several people. We have one of the largest coaching staff for the same reason.  Tepper doesnt mind spending money and wants everyone to have the resources to succeed. He has said as much

It is how you talk about your QB if the last meaningful games he played were in 2007 and this is 2020 and he still isn't healthy.

You still think Cam is coming back?

I believe he most likely is, seeing as how we don't have an answer to QB on the roster, and have too many major needs to draft one.  All depends on if he is healthy, though.

I know a lot of people pushing him to be gone will be disappointed.

If we get rid of him despite being healthy, I just don't see an option that will improve the team available.  For years to come.
