We dont know if he is serviceable or not.  We know he is coming off a major injury, will be 30 by the start of the season and is expensive.

Here is what I know (with my brain):  If the season opens, and Cam is not the QB and we did not draft a QB, you all are going to be pissed.

If the season opens and Cam is not the qb, I will have already known it for a while and will be pissed but over it. I don’t want to draft a qb this year regardless. If we don’t have Cam, wait for next year and Trevor.

I think Allen is as good as most QB that would be available at 7 th pick of this year’s draft.   We have a competent coach and competent team, Allen can game manage it to a winning record. Easy.

The notion that Allen is as good as most QB's that will be available at 7 is certainly up for debate but does not speak well for those QB's based on Allen's performance last year. Whether we have a competent coach at the NFL level remains to be seen. I'm not dissing Coach Rhule, it's simply not a supportable assertion at this point. I would argue strongly that last year's record plus retirement of Luke and to a lesser degree Olsen so far this offseason, with possible further departures of key players to come, makes the notion we have a competent team an extremely dubious one.

I think it's possible Allen could game manage to a winning record, but I don't think there's a lot of existing evidence to support the notion that seems likely. His ability to win eroded significantly as the year progressed and it is hard to make the argument at the moment that the roster around him has improved. If anything so far it has gotten dramatically worse just by losing the greatest MLB of his generation to retirement.

I am pretty sure Allen showed why he was a UDFA and NOT a top ten pick. That's what I think.
