Why the Panthers might Draft Herbert

Right, we should take the 3rd best QB instead of an immediate impact DT, OT, or LB. There is a dirth of talent there that have higher ceilings and higher floors than Herbert at their positions.

We still have Cam, and next year has plenty of talent at QB. There is no reason to get pulled into draft a lower potential QB at the expense of other positions of need just you WANT one now. You can hope in one hand and crap in the other and I don't need to guess at which one fills up first. You make take the most talented player, especially at a position of need. You don't draft scraps.

The "best OT prospect" adds 0 wins to your win total next season, and about as many over the course of a career.

I don't care who is under contract for next season, the draft doesn't have anything to do with next season, especially at the QB position.

Trevor Lawrence will never be a Carolina panther and NFL teams don't intentionally bypass seasons on the back of such fantasies

confused larry david GIF

so you don't have any insightful commentary on his performance or his listed draft value inside league circles when he came out?

but I don't understand, you made that absolute and broadsweeping comment before as if you had intelligent commentary to offer, now you're saying you don't have any

IDK about "zero wins." It's hard to determine a direct impact that an offensive lineman has on wins and losses. One thing that should stand out is how often our QB has been healthy and hit. That can be measured and it doesn't look good.

My actual thought was:

"Wow! That might be the most stupid statement I've ever heard about football in my entire life," but I figured a .gif would just display that without much reading.

I wasn't the original poster that you are replying to.

As for my commentary, his performances were pretty mixed. He had three penalties and allowed 3 sacks in just four games, which is not exactly a stellar result. He has some flashes of good play and plenty of times where he got put on roller skates. I personally saw little that made me thing he was a future franchise LT and his health is a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE concern after two concussions and a high ankle sprain in his first season. He's not a guy I think we can safely bank our future on at the moment for that reason alone.

As for his draft value, I am not sure what relevance that has now but I recall him being considered a high ceiling, low floor prospect, hence his drop into the second round. I think that really spoke volumes about what the league thought about him after being considered by the media as a potential top 15 guy prior to the draft.

I will stick with drafting for value.  If the number 2 player in the draft (some say Brown) is there at 7, then I am taking him and knowing that I have made money, so to speak.

I will not take any guy that is maybe 10th or 15th or so just because I need one.  We have soooooo many needs, we need to make the draft count.

None of us know how our war room has players rated, so hard for us to do anything but argue about every Joe Blow out there and their ratings.

Draft for value and consider trading down.  This is my keys to the rebuild

Is "tiny Kyle Allen got hurt" really the bedrock of this argument

Correlation doesn't necessitate causality, especially when the given solution is "spend the 7th pick in the draft on a player that will do little to mitigate the purported problem and bolster our odds at the overarching goal.

I find it amazing that one can't correlate a lack of QB protection to not only your starter getting injured, but also his backup, and giving up a blistering number of sacks. All while having the leagues best RB, and a 1,000 yard receiver.

CLEARLY the problem is something other than the protection.

Clearly.

How about "big Cam Newton" and "tiny Taylor Heinicke" also getting injured behind that OL?

And the rest of your word salad really is just complete nonsense unless you actually believe that our terrible OL was not a problem. One of many, to be sure, but one of our bigger problems.

alright chums since you've adopted the burden of proof here, why don't you quickly round up how many FRANCHISE LEFT TACKLES have led their team to Super Bowl Glory

I'll do quarterback then we'll compare notes

If not I'll just save you the hassle:

The offensive line as a group isn't what it once was

Greg Little's play in 2019 is not the issue--how much improvement can you get from him now?

Imagine we drafted Thomas last season.  He missed most of preseason, had 2 concussions.  Playing beside GVR or Williams--vs. Defenses that were not too worried about the run--blitzing, etc. What might he look like--A: Greg Little in 2019.

If anyone thinks there is disagreement about Little based on 2019, there is not.
