I've gone back and forth so much with both Brown and Simmons. I worry if Brown can really be an impact player at the next level or just a space eater that does well but isn't great. I worry about Simmons because we had the best LB in the past decade and our defense was still sorry.

Okudah is my clear #1. Simmons and Brown I keep going back and forth on. I do like the trade back idea but only until 13 at the latest.

I don't see Brown as just a space eater.  He's shown a lot more impact in the passing game than some might realize.  No, he doesn't have monster sack numbers, but he is often the reason other guys did get the sacks or others a pick.  He pushes the pocket, forces double and triple teams (freeing things up for other guys), and forces QB's into bad throws.  IMO, he is a true impactful DT, and I think that will translate.  So, I would be thrilled with him if he is the pick.

With that said, Simmons or Okudah would also be huge gets for us.  IMO, we really can't lose if we stay at #7...that is unless the team takes Herbert or Love (both almost certain busts, IMO), but I don't think there is realistically much risk of that happening.

IMO, the biggest difference between Simmons and Brown (I'm not including Okudah because I don't believe there's much of a chance he'll be there, but if he was, I'd rate him very similarly to Simmons) is that Simmons is a playmaker that will make things happen all over the field and have a bigger direct impact on the game.  Brown, on the other hand, will allow other to make plays.  Yes, he'd hugely impact our run defense, but as a whole, he'll open things up for other guys.  Either would have a big impact on our defense for years to come, and both bring a lot to the table.

If I had to choose, though, I'd probably go Simmons simply because he can have such a big impact in so may ways on defense.  Especially with the way the league is going with highly mobile QB's.  Just imaging playing a team like Baltimore, you need a guy like Simmons if you really want any chance to contain Jackson.  Nowadays, you need defenders that can match the speed of some of these QB's coming out.  They just make the defenses job a whole lot easier.

Bottom line, I'd be extremely happy with either, and if we take one of them, we will definitely be draft winners.

If he doesn't look for some protection for his young QB.. He still hasn't learn from his Byron Bell left handed days..

I think he should go T in the draft's first round.  If you need a T, it is stupid to chase a LB.

But they converted to a 3-4 2 years ago and they were porous last year.  Brown could play the NT and 5.

Then draft a T round 2.  I dunno.

There really doesn't seem to be a consensus about the CBs after the first 2.  Its really going to be important to what the defense does schematically and what prospect fits that.

Jaylon Johnson (Utah) is another one that would be interesting in the 2nd.

Isn't Dexter Lawrence a NT?? Their 1st round pick last year.. 6'4 330+ isn't a 3tech.. Then again Gettelmen does some weird poo sometimes.. So I dunno either..

Im really liking Cameron Dantzler CB from Mississippi st in the 2nd round.

6'2 190lbs - Long and lanky, aggressive tackler in run support, went up against some of the best WR's in the nation. Mississippi st does a great job producing nfl players recently.

Didn't run a good 40 at the combine at 4.64. He has shown the ability to play good man coverage in the SEC. With his length, tackling ability he would excel in zone coverage.

NFL.com has his player comparison to Al Harris

Damn that’s slow and it’s also why you can’t trust Pro Days. A guy who runs 4.64 at the combine and 4.38 at his pro day just means that his pro day number is useless. Funchess went from 4.7 to 4.47 and we know how “fast” he was  with us. Delpit ran 4.39 at his pro day and didn’t run at the combine because he obviously knew he would have a slow time.

That said, we don’t need Donte fast because his speed doesn’t seem to correlate to not giving up big plays, but a 4.64 CB is a horrible pick at 38. Maybe 5th or possibly 4th.

Personally I think Derrick Brown would be the best option at 7 but would not be upset if we select Isaiah Simmons.

My preference list:
1. Wills
2. Simmons
3. Brown
4. Trade back for Kinlaw/Becton
5. Okudah

we have a pick in the early 2nd round.

TE at 38 might be the worst pick we could make. I’d argue for every other position over TE. RB, QB and S would be the next. Thomas can do the little that Moss did at LSU last year. LSU had the best college WRs and Moss still had less than 10% of Burrow’s total passing yards. A second TE to share the 400-450 yards with Thomas?

Verge, why do you think so many mocks are undecided on if the Chargers are taking a QB?  I've only seen a very small sample over the past few months with the Dolphins passing on a QB, but I have seen a significant amount that has the Chargers taking BPA, assuming the next QB in line ins't it.

No QB action in FA with the draft in a week...could they really be content to go into the season with Taylor as the lead man?  Not to mention Easton Stick as the only backup.
