Another year, another draft thread.

I honestly am a tad bit worried about Simmons. I will probably eat crow on this but I feel like he is a jack of all trades master of none and might not end up being the impact player you all think he will be. I could be really, really wrong.

My wish list is still as follows:

1. Okudah

2. Trade down (probably take Kinlaw)

3. Simmons

4. DT

That does concern me a bit, but that's also because we are accustomed to outdated defenses who didn't play to the players strengths.  I do have a little more faith in Snow and Rhule to have a more inventive defense.

Derwin James is a guy this cat reminds me of, and he did slip...but I bet he wouldn't if we had to re-do that draft.  SD figured out how to use that player, and I think that we could to.

That said, I still much prefer the very best offensive tackle at 7, and if it's not there, move back a bit, especially if a club is targeting a falling QB at that spot.

I've gone back and forth so much with both Brown and Simmons. I worry if Brown can really be an impact player at the next level or just a space eater that does well but isn't great. I worry about Simmons because we had the best LB in the past decade and our defense was still sorry.

Okudah is my clear #1. Simmons and Brown I keep going back and forth on. I do like the trade back idea but only until 13 at the latest.

The only reason I am not sure about Okudah is because this draft is really deep at CB so you could get a really solid one at 38. Is Brown and CB at 38 better than Okudah and DT at 38?

In all honestly, it’s not going to matter. I think best case scenario is that we have a choice between 2 of the 3 and most likely we will have the last of the 3 along with OTs, Herbert and Kinlaw.

Same could be said about DTs, there should be some really good ones in the second or third round.  Historically DTs tend to get under drafted.

I think you have a better chance of getting the 3rd or 4th DT off of the board at 38, then you do of the 3rd or 4th CB off of the board.

Not a chance. I'm leaning towards Wirf at this point. Leaving us with Simmons.

I have been reading a lot from NY Giant sites and blogs, etc.  They mentioned Thomas because he is the best LT.   They have Solder, and I doubt he is out quite yet.

At LB, they signed Martinez from Green Bay on a 3-year, 30 million $ deal.  The signed Mayo for 3 years (ST, backup?), and another ILB is coming off surgery (Connelly).

Gettlemen addressed CB and LB in free agency.  The NY fans and media are very high on Connelly, and here is the reason:

Ryan Connelly played in four games and started three games in 2019. The rookie totaled 10 combined tackles, including 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack. On top of that, he flashed his potential in coverage, coming away with 2 interceptions and allowing only 4 receptions on 7 targets (57.1% completion) for a minimal 19 yards (4.8 yards per completion). His coverage skills could complete the Giants’ defense after they signed two run-defending inside linebackers this offseason.

Why did Gettlemen sign Martinez if Connelly shows so much promise?  Well, they converted to the 3-4 defense 2 years ago, so 2 ILBs are needed.  Ximines, a rookie last season that had 2 starts, got 4.5 sacks and 24 tackles.  His role should expand.  While there is room for improvement and Simmons would do the trick, LB as a whole is no longer the need it was in February.

Jones, on the other hand, needs to be protected.  Gettlemen's job is on the line based on Jones' performance.  He will go OT---

Wirfs or Wills my guess

Brown, Simmons and Okudah are perfect prospects and there is a drop off at their positions after them...

But at each position you can find players who will come in day 1 and compete for starting jobs .  In the 2nd and 3rd round.. LB I think you can go to the 4th and get that...

What Gettlemen might be thinking:
Sit tight and grab Brown DT

Trade back and grab Wirfs, Wills, or Thomas.

If he doesn't look for some protection for his young QB.. He still hasn't learn from his Byron Bell left handed days..
