While Tepper and Rhule's plan is long term,l sustained success,  they aren't going into this coming season with ANY intention of draft position next year. That is purely a fan's perspective,  and would never be adopted by the coaches, and/owner.

Yea that’s such a loser mentality to expect from one the biggest bulls of the asset management game

Not Panthers related but on the theme of drafting a Qb

On the Morning of the draft Jon Gruden (ESPN at the time) told Joel Klatt that Andy Reid was going to draft Mahomes because he reminded him of Favre

Can a team pass on a talent like that if you believe  he is next big thing at Qb?

Bpa won't be a QB with the 7th pick. I don't think it makes sense regardless of what happens to Cam. I doubt anyone in the front office expects to win the Super Bowl next year. So if they are going to be patient, then accumulate talent over the next few years by drafting bpa.

Here is what few seem to be even considering:

Yes, we bring back a healthy Cam--and even if we do, QB is not off the board.  There has been enough fact in the media to determine that Tepper and Rhule are not ready to give Cam the title, "QB of the future."

So if we were going after Herbert, for example, would it not be smart to announce Cam's return and denounce the need for a QB?  Maybe it was leaked-perhaps intentionally--to keep people from trading up to get Herbert.   What if the plan is to keep Cam on if healthy, develop Herbert for a season, and then transition?  That sure is a better plan than waiting to draft a QB in 2021 and hoping you get a good one.  There is no guarantee that we will be picking in the top 10 next season.  How effective is it?  As soon as it was announced that Cam might be back, everyone scratched QB off the list.   Maybe we should have added it. Silly us.

Before people miss the point and start railing about Herbert--do not believe what you hear--this is poker at this point.  Teams are not tipping their hands.

Not saying this isn't possible, but here's why i think this would be a bad move if true:

If Cam comes back and proves himself this year, then for all intents and purposes, you expect to have your starting qb beyond the point where drafting a rookie to replace him at the moment makes any sense. If Cam plays well and stays healthy, you'd expect to have him at least another 5 years into his mid 30's. Nobody drafts a qb in the first not expecting such a qb to play for six years.

Now if you're suggesting the team possibly has no intention of sticking with Cam long term regardless of his play this season, then that would be dumb just because of bird in the hand worth two in the bush. And with franchise qb's it may be more like bird in the hand worth 4 to 5 in the bush, since so many prospects don't pan out. It would just never be smart to dump a healthy productive Cam for some guy you don't know what you've got yet.

I think the smart move is to make this draft about making the team and particularly the offense around Cam as good as you can in order to see what he and Brady together can give you, then next offseason make your determination about whether or not you need a qb. Personally I'm excited to see what a healthy Cam could do in a Brady offense because for the majority of his career I felt his two weaknesses were accuracy and holding on to the ball too long. What I didn't realize until we got Turner was that a big portion of that was the nature of the system he was playing in, and I saw both of those weaknesses become less of an issue in the brief window we got in first half of 18. I think Brady could take Cam to a whole new level of passing effectiveness as a mature veteran that we've only glimpsed before.

May be, but it's the truth.

Bad QB class. Bad idea to draft one early.... especially considering the state of the OL.

the NFL doesn't work this way, ever and trying to argue that it does is beneath you.

"oh wow boys we got a shot a franchise QB, if only we had somebody to really anchor that LG spot, shame on us, gotta pull the trigger I'm afraid, HOG MOLLIES wins super bowls, I mean okay, not really, but it sounds smart to say."

No team has ever put off drafting a QB because of something as negligible as the offensive line lol.

"they would if the QB class was bad!"

I won't insult you anymore for feeling this way but literally nobody of consequence agrees with you.
