Matt Rhule and Dave Gettleman: "You win Superbowls by running the bull and stopping the run"

First of all, this interview is old, probably the day he got here.

The line the OP emphasizes  ("run, stop run") isn't the only thing he said about his philosophy of how to win.  He said more about being creative, adaptable, and succeeding with dynamic, big plays.  To me, that doesn't underplay the importance of passing.

The crux of his plan is to meet the players, listen to what they have to say, and plan a strategy around what he feels they can do best.

He alluded to Cam without naming him, but between the lines, you have to think he'll be overjoyed to game-plan around Cam's talents.

I'm no tautologist, but I can repeat myself in a different way, if you like.

The interview I posted was not the first, or only time, he's repeated this mantra

It's been his most widely held belief for a long time, and you can find the same quotes going back to Baylor and Temple.  He's really wedded to the notion that you win games by running the ball and stopping the run (I'm amazed at how similar he sounds to Gettleman at times).

Not addressing the fact the Chiefs had the third worst defense against stopping the run in the NFL

Half of this manta is that 'stopping the run' is important, when all the analytics stress it's actually defending the passing game to be correlated with success.

What causyals fans fail to realize, if ya can't stop the run, ya certainly won't be stopping the pass.

I'm a Panthers fan who had to deal with Ron Rivera believing in the 'run the ball, stop the run' mythology for nearly a decade.

We finally fire him, and replace him with another guy who believes the same mythology.

If you're a Panthers fan, it should deeply concern you.

Every coach in the nfl believes in it.

Physical football will almost always win out. Shanahan abandoned the team's run game. He abandoned their strength. They lost because of it. 9ers controlled most of the game simply by being more physical. It threw the Chiefs off their game.

Anybody who thinks that passing 80%+ of all plays is a way to win consistently is just wrong. Your best teams are almost always gonna be even split or run heavy.

We just have to find a Patrick Mahommes

Cam would have been better than Mahommes had he had an Andy Reid type coach to start his career. Instead he got a Dinosaur who was more concerned with milking the clock to keep his sorry defenses rested than actually scoring points.

Cam in the no huddle offense was pretty unstoppable. We didn’t do it that much because Ron wanted to win games 6-3.

Their QB was their leading rusher in the post season.....

Also had large defecits to overcome in each game.

42 pass attempts tonight, 29 runs (and 9 were by Mahomes on scrambles from passing situations).

There were at least 2 option runs for Mahomes, including the TD, and Damien averaged 4 yds/carry (16 for 66) even before that last TD. KC doesn't win without being able to run.

SF got cute, that's what cost them the game.  Their strength is running the ball, and they got away with that.  I think 90% of the coaches in the NFL would love to be able to pound the rock for an entire game and throw 6 total passes.  But the reality is that's not how it works.

The NFL is situational football.  Sometimes you get to run the ball 40 times a game.  Sometimes you don't and you have to throw it 50 times.  The Chiefs made adjustments (which is the biggest thing) which allowed them to make the game more to their liking.

Also, it's really not fair to judge Rhule without him even coaching a game.  Some of y'all will just NEVER be happy.  Yay for the internet!

    • You go after my guy with nonsense like "I don't see quickness or explosiveness" and "I haven't seen a lot of quickness or full route tree ability that we always ignore" Then yea, I'm gonna punch back. Like I've said, if people want to draft someone else, that's totally fine, everyone has their own opinions.  But if you're going to advocate against a specific player, don't talk complete nonsense about their game like this. Even more so, don't do that when you're saying I'm the one with a bias towards him. If I was afraid of it looking like a bias pick on my part, I'd never have said I was an Arizona alumni when arguing for him, but I've admitted it from the very beginning, because I don't think my Arizona connection gives me a bias, it just means I know his game REALLY well as I've seen every snap of his college career.  So yea, you start saying the knocks on him are things that he's actually really good at, then you're going to get an earful from me with some video evidence to back it up. In the end, for me, it all falls back to how rare a player like T-Mac can be due to his size.  The smaller speedier type of WRs are exactly who you can find in later rounds and who become available as Free Agents, I can't ever get on board with taking a Hunter (as a WR) or Burden over T-Mac if all were on the board, for that reason alone, and I'd say that if he was a freaking Sun Devil, no matter how much it would hurt me to admit if it if that were the case.
