CMC's Potential New Contract - Discussion

This was the offseason for CMC to hold out anyways if he was smart.  If you want him sign him now so you can let him go in 3-4 years when he's breaking down.  Never smart to sign a RB long term but if we are moving on from Cam like the signs point you can at least give the new QB a safety blanket his first couple years and not totally screw yourself.  Time to focus on giving him and the new QB an oline and letting them work.

Dude we just won 5 games with hu is record breaking year.  It's the absolute worst time for him to hold out

I didnt realize that winning 5 games meant players cant get a new contract?  RBs have a short shelf life, getting that second contract should be all that matters to them.  When you do what he did you try and cash out immediately, it happens to line up nicely where the team is losing a lot of its notable players and has appropraite cap room for him.

They can get new deals but planting your flag on a 5 win season is a strange hill to die on if you plan on holding out.

5 wins is a team and coach thing which is why Rivera is gone.

CMC just came off one of the most impressive seasons for a running back. He deserves and should get a new contract.

Over 1000 yards rushing and over 1000 yards receiving isnt justification for a new deal?

So what kind of bath salts are the detractors mail lining to be against locking up CMC?!?!?

If we have the franchise QB in place it is a much easier decision to make. Without one? Well let's just say we're Panthers fans and we know a thing or two about regret over big contract extensions.

anyone who thinks a rb should be given a significant second contract isn't an intelligent football fan. sorry, but it's the truth.

drafting a rb in the top 10 is stupid and giving them a second contract is even more stupid.

take the 3rd round comp pick when someone like the jets or redskins pay him his $100m and draft another rb who will give you better value.

with the salary cap, an nfl team has to pick and choose where to spend their money. successful teams know you don't pay rbs.

So clearly by labeling him a RB you’re under the impression a coach like Rivera and his system used CMC correctly and utilized his abilities 100%

lol

as squirrel pointed out you’re simply talking about a RB not a dynamic playmaker that can do everything from WR to RB to Scat back.

No.  He already has a deal.  The cba is set just for this reasoning

I am curious why the oft used "emotional attachment" angle we've seen so much in recent months is always suspiciously absent in this particular discussion.

We have faced very harsh truths about the futures for a number of players in recent months, even #1. This situation is no different.

What the fug are you talking about...emotional attachment is clear with Cam because a lot of fans wouldn’t watch the Panthers without him. Comparing a injured 30 year old running qb most likely past his prime To a 23 year of who just joined the 1k/1k club in the middle or even before his prime and calling it all the same and emotional I mean if there’s no difference to you I mean the irony...that’s literally defining emotional attachment.

    • He can say what he feels, but he's not saying "the previous year, the team wasn't very good" he directly called his teammates out and in a way that is flat-out not true. "You are your record"? Oh ok, he's only had 3 winning seasons, but in my mind he isn't a loser, and I bet he isn't in his either - cause football is a team sport and wins and losses are on the team, even when one really bad player (Jimminy Pickles) can basically screw over everything.  And this comes on the heels of his thing about the MVP, which is fine, but also selfish. His teammates consistently went to bat for him... Just feels like he's more about himself.
    • Good point--I think this draft is great for us at this time--At the top of the draft, the DT (DEs/NTs in 3-4) are loaded.  The Edges are deep.  We need to double dip there--hoping to move back so we can add three players to that pool.  In free agency, if I were Morgan, I would focus on DBs and  ILB--fix the back end of the defense.  If he signed a S, CB, ILB, and TE, it would be cost effective.  In the draft, DE, Edge, and WR should be the priorities.  After that, OL Depth, QB depth, DB depth, RB depth.  My Free agent Targets:  TE: Juwan Johnson, Saints.  29, had over 500 yards with Saints. S: Julian Blackmon, Colts.  He will be one of the top free agents--gonna cost us, but not like an edge or WR. ILB: Tyrel Dodson, Dolphins.  80 tackles on just 854 snaps--under 27 years of age. CB: Mike Jackson, Carolina.  He is 28 and had 3 picks and was on the field at all times.  68 PFF score. NT:  best available for Evero's system.
