CMC's Potential New Contract - Discussion

And let's take the gloves off with the 2017 8th overall pick.

In the year we drafted him our QB led our team in rushing. His best year was 2019 and we won 1 divisional game and tumbled into the cellar of the entire league.

So the obvious answer to all this is to double down and make him the highest paid RB after spending a top 10 pick?

This is not how you build a winning team in the modern NFL.

Overvaluing running backs is kind of our thing unfortunately.

We force fed him quite a bit to get him the 1k/1k, but he definitely deserves to get paid. I'm not sure the smart thing for us is to be the team that pays him given where we are, but we tend to be an emotional team rather than a smart one. When (not if) we decide to break the RB market over our knee, we need to get the new QB in right then so that we have the rookie deal in place. Hope we hit and see ya Cam, thanks for everything.

I am curious why the oft used "emotional attachment" angle we've seen so much in recent months is always suspiciously absent in this particular discussion.

We have faced very harsh truths about the futures for a number of players in recent months, even #1. This situation is no different.

Just hired a negotiator from the Steelers where they made Bell a reasonable but not top of the market offer.  They didn’t budge beyond that. Bell is almost the perfect comparison to CMC.  Would expect the same “process” here.

Everyone should read this 2x.  Cmac ain't breaking the bank this year

Terrible decision to do it before the 2021 season, when he is playing under the 5th year option.

You can start negotiations for a contract beyond the 2021 season as soon as he is under the 5YO.

If negotiations don't go our way, we can franchise tag him when he's up for FA.

You don't pay someone in advance like that without having some kind of leverage if things sour. We have the leverage of the 5YO with CMC. If he plays at the same level in that 5th year and is still in good shape, you try to sign him up for a long extension. If he refuses, he can get tagged and get an AVG of highest paid RB salary instead of highest paid RB salary. IDGAF.

Damn good post. No sense tools it prematurely after the 3rd.  Especially in a rebuild
