What do Raheem Mostert and Damien Williams have in common?

Quite a lot

They're the two starting running backs for the two teams in the Super Bowl.  They were also undrafted free agents who are making pennies.  And this year's Super Bowl is no exception;  look back for two decades now, and see how little capital winning teams invested into their running backs.

The analytics can be muddled and contentious about many topics in the NFL;  but one thing has almost unanimously been decided.   Running backs are almost completely fungible, and have the lowest positional value of any player on the field (aside from special teams).  Winning teams do not draft running backs high, nor do they give them large contacts.

Being a 'slot receiver' does not make one an exception to this rule (and in fact, the most elite slot receivers don't get paid very much).

Austin Ekeler's salary - Half a million dollars

If you would rather be entertained by your favorite player, rather than win, then be transparent about your motives.

They're both backups on teams whose starters are injured.

CMC will get a contract based on the fact that when we do try and develop our next franchise QB, CMC will be a huge boon in their development. He is just that good. I get it, he is a RB and i usually don't value those but CMC is the exception and not norm.

Now what would surprise me is that he wants to stay and waste the next few years here. Not that i would love it but I could completly understand if he wanted to go to free agency to find a competitor and not us. We would still win because we should be able to get high compensation for him. Not sure why all the ruckus, we aren't winning anyways and with all the dead money and bad contracts, why not have one guy who is actually worth the contract?

Panthers are not taking good notes from the top contenders in the league. 49ers and Chiefs use a committee. Pats as well. We are going down a path of staying in the middle of the pack if he do this. Pats would never they would enjoy these rookie contracts as long as they could. In order for cmc to be effective he needs a star QB. Cmc cant push the pile he cant take over a game against a legitimate team. He is not worth a bank breaking contract because he is not the missing piece to a championship. Remove your emotions. Look at the formula for success.

49ers did make Mckinnon a top 5 paid rb during their build, and still roster him.  He just happened to be unable to see the field after that.

Here we go. CMC is a great player. But...

We can't keep a QB on the field for more than a few games at a time because the oline is getting their Aces handed to them, and we think we should pay a RB $10+M a year? Draft a RB in the 3rd or later when it's time for CMC to get paid. Or maybe even use the other RBs on the team already. Either way, you don't break the bank on a RB - this is coming from a former D1 RB/Slotback. Granted CMC is different. Very different. But he'll wear down due to the hits with little to no warning. And he could be replaced with a committee with little to no drop off. You're not gonna find one guy that can do everything he does. But you can find 2 or 3 guys that can fill the void. And all 3 would be less than half of what we're suggesting for CMC. A guy like CMC is fine for a rookie contract, but the second contract needs to go to a team that's looking for someone to get them over the hump.

People talk about how it's stupid to keep Cam because it's going to be a five year re-build then on the same token say yes let's make McCaffrey the highest paid RB in the NFL

Sounds about white.

That proves the point tho

Proves a point that bad RB contracts arent necessarily a death blow while not ideal, not sure anyone ever thought Mckinnon should be paid that.  Though I think by the time we are in contention this bad CMC contract would be rolling off the books anyways.

McKinnon got paid like 7.5 million a season, double that for cmc. And it proves you don’t have to pay rbs top money to win.

Totally agree you dont have to pay RBs to win, and that you should do the opposite and would prefer we didnt. I just dont think paying CMC is ever going to affect our ability to sign people in the next three or so years when his contract will be guaranteed so i'm not sure its something to get THAT worried about.  Its looking like we'll have a QB on a rookie contract, and with contracts rolling off unless we are throwing out garbage contracts we'll be just fine.  Its fine to build a team the smart way but you also have to be willing to look at the situation and accept that sometimes its ok to deviate.
