Yeah I'm also kinda torn on this one. I think there's something reasonable in almost every point of view expressed on this one. The idea I like the most would be to explore the possibility of converting him to receiver to extend his career, but I have no idea if CMC himself would be open to the idea. If he is, I think it might be the best all around option.

The one simple message I would give to anybody on this question...

Evaluate the player, not the position.

Dontari Poe and Aaron Donald are both defensive tackles. Thinking they're in the same stratosphere because they play the same position is silly.

Well I hate to break it to you but worrying to the point that it affects your health is a you problem, not a they problem.   It's not that serious.

Your first step to recovery is acceptance.

Repeat after me.

I have no control over what happens with this team.

You're so wrong.

Everything I yell at the TV on sunday absolutely affects this team.  Especially the stuff about Jerome Boger. Also David Tepper reads my posts and considers them thoughtfully while pondering his master plan. It all depends on me.

Except ummm...

it's not my fault when we lose.

That's your fault for not caring enough.

Be more like me.

No, you are wrong about one thing.  It is your fault when they lose.  I was there and saw the whole thing.

I don't care.  It's not coming out of my pocket.

Yet, you and others will come and yell at the moon in regards to Hurney.

It seems those who chastise others of being emotional for other players, are being emotional with this looming situation and player.

re. I too, white as I am, like watching the whitey run fast and do cool stuff. If he would bust out some dance moves in the end zone, I'd buy him a round in Valhalla.

People don't like to admit it, but this is a huge part of it, and people want to pay him double for the pleasure of being entertained by what you just described.

If Austin Ekeler were our running back (993 receiving yards, same PFF rating as CMC as a rusher), no one would want to give him 20 million.

Our franchise is boring right now, and CMC will be the only draw for a rebuilding team to sell tickets.  So regardless of what Hurney wants to do, Tepper will make a business decision to overpay CMC on the field to sell tickets.  All owners probably would.

What do Raheem Mostert and Damien Williams have in common?

Quite a lot

They're the two starting running backs for the two teams in the Super Bowl.  They were also undrafted free agents who are making pennies.  And this year's Super Bowl is no exception;  look back for two decades now, and see how little capital winning teams invested into their running backs.

The analytics can be muddled and contentious about many topics in the NFL;  but one thing has almost unanimously been decided.   Running backs are almost completely fungible, and have the lowest positional value of any player on the field (aside from special teams).  Winning teams do not draft running backs high, nor do they give them large contacts.

Being a 'slot receiver' does not make one an exception to this rule (and in fact, the most elite slot receivers don't get paid very much).

Austin Ekeler's salary - Half a million dollars

If you would rather be entertained by your favorite player, rather than win, then be transparent about your motives.

Hurney is the reason you guys are miserable.  None of this causes me to give one mouse fart about it much less want to argue on a message board about it.

Yeah Hurney sucks at his job, so what?  I can laugh about that one until he's gone.

Smart thing to do would be

Trade CMC for draft picks to an old school general manager not versed in analytics who still values running backs (maybe Gettleman wants two)

Sign Austin Ekeler for 2.5 million dollars a year (who is essentially the same player as CMC).  Ekeler would have had 1000/1000 this year if he wasn't splitting carries with Gordon.

To the people talking about converting McCaffrey full time to receiver, you might wanna go back and listen to the comments Rhule and Brady have made about flexibility in their attack. Pigeonholing McCaffrey into old fashioned ideas of defined position roles doesn't really match up with that.

Heck, I'd say having a guy you can just line up anywhere is probably exactly what our offensive coaches would want.

not sure why these people are so giddy at the idea of limiting McCaffrey to one role when he can play two...Dude is deadly coming out of the back field.  How many times was he just wide open for easy 10-15 yard pickups?  It would not be that simple if he was just a receiver running regular routes.  You use McCaffrey how he is supposed to be used...as the ultimate weapon.

I can’t logically get behind resigning, especially when determining what’s best for team in what may be a rebuild(which I have no interest in).

however, I think we wait before potentially resigning him if the plan is to retool instead of rebuild.

if not the best case is to trade cmc for whatever we can get, especially if we are not excepting to compete in the next couple years. A healthy cam really could dictate who’ll we retain on the offense long term
