I think you don't retire it. I think you leave it there and let someone dare to take it like the sword in the stone. Let it be a challenge to anyone on the Panthers who thinks they can do better.

Frankly, it seems like the kinda thing Smitty represented; cajones, ego, and proving the doubters wrong by backing it up on the field.

Nothing specifically against Smith, but fans always want to retire Jerseys. Heck, the guys on the radio today were wanting to retire about four or five of them.

It's the kind of thing that honestly should be really really hard to attain, not the kind of honor you should give out frequently.

I mean, how many have we retired? If it were up to me it would be Smitty and Mills and at present maybe nobody else. Should Jersey retired be harder than Canton? I feel like being enshrined should be where the conversation starts. Once you’re in there, the question is, did you mean enough to the franchise to also have your jersey retired.

As always YMMV

Who else is more deserving? If you give out one jersey every 25 years,  no one holds a candle to the inferno that is Agent89.

At present, it's only Mills.

He didn't start here though. Great man, but not a career Panther. Should be for long time Panthers only.

Mills gave this franchise its identity more than any other person, and that includes JR. Saying he didn’t start here is absurd because when he started playing we didn’t exist. He was a part of this franchise from its first game until his death. What exactly more could you reasonably expect from anyone whose playing career started before 1995?

I mean Smitty asked us to retire it, so I’m in favor of that, but I like the way you’re thinking here.
