No matter the weapons and the way the league is moving towards. Games are still won in the trenches.

The 49ers did it right. They spent the last 3 drafts getting their lines straightened out. We should do the same. Dont draft a QB until we fix the trenches. I dont want a quick fix. I want sustained excellence

This assumes our GM can make solid picks. Every Little type pick sets us back.

Isn't it crazy how long we have been saying this.

Maybe this is the year they actually make it a priority to get some help. Who knows what Cam would've done with the help he deserved. And I would go as far to say for Luke too. Losing Star put some strain on him.

The same things that made us bad this year if replaced can make us....who knows next year. I feel like we are halfway there by getting this level of coaching in, I could be wrong but I dont think we could have made better hires so far, young, bright, and innovative. 2nd is a Star replacement, wich I think Hurney tried to do with Poe but he didn't live up to what he was supposed to be. The DT position effects the entire defense especially the one eating blocks and destroying run schemes, tho they dont put up the stats they are among the most important position on the field. 3rd is the Center position, (which I think is the 2nd most important position on offense)LT gets all the attention but if the center breaks down the qb gets hit quicker as there is no pocket and in general the whole offense is worse. Hurney tried with Paradis (it also failed) but really we need high picks at both those positions, we could really help the team with our first two picks this year. Keep Cam, have better coaching, draft a freak DT, and a franchise center in the second. With these moves who knows what we can do in the next few seasons, mark it if I'm wrong I'll eat it but i don't think we need a full rebuild.

It also helps when you don’t have a moron running the show. The past two drafts have been very deep on interior OL/DL. We ended up after the 1st with Gaulden, Donte, Grier, Miller, Haynes, Thomas (liked him), Scarlett, Godwin, Little, Daley, Carter and Norton. Don’t forget we had an extra 3rd in both drafts.

So, we traded up for a LT whose stock was dropping over multiple C/Gs who’ve done really well (McCoy was my guy) and a 6th round T and a 7th round DT. That’s it with 6 day 2 picks.

We did nothing in deep drafts to replace Ryan Kalil and Norwell, two all-pro/pro bowl guys on OL and we did nothing to get young and cheap at DT so we’ll spend another $30M plus on DT after spending $40M this year for the worst run D.

Now, all of a sudden we are interested in OL and DL. As much grief as Gettleman gets in here for making bad picks (had some doozies), he also in 5 drafts drafted Short, Star, Norwell (undrafted), Turner, Williams, Moton, Butler, Hall, Ealy and Kugbila. I know multiple guys didn’t work out at all and one guy got hurt and clearly hasn’t gotten back, but that’s at least 2 trench guys per draft and using mainly day 1 and day 2 picks. 2 1sts, 3 2nds, 2 3rds, 2 4ths and 1 UDFA. Marty on the other hand in 2 drafts has used one 2nd, 6th and 7th on trench guys. No, I don’t count OLBs who can’t stop the run as trench guys. Because of the past two drafts we now have an OL that gives up the most sacks and a DL that is the worst run D in the NFL.

Yea, it's sad when you look at it and realize that the average fan could at least draft positionally better. Hurneys problem has always been on how hard he busts when he does bust, usually when he does something bad it's not just bad its STUPID. If he could only replicate his 1st round success in the 2nd and 3rd at least but instead he does dumb stuff like Grier, Edwards, ect.

Patrick Mahomes is a Generational talent.  But he has the help keeping him upright from former #1 Overall Pick Erick Fisher at LT.

DL

Chris Jones (2nd rounder turned probowler)

Traded a 1st for probowl Edge Rusher Frank Clark.

Watching the 49ers dominate

Their DL consists of

- #2 Overall Bosa

- #7 Overall Deforest Buckner

- 1st rounder (#17) Arik Armstead

- Pro Bowl Edge rusher they traded for, Dee Ford

- #3 Overall Solomon Thomas

Their OL

-LT: Joe Staley (1st rounder)

- LG: Laken Tomlinson (1st rounder of Detroit)

-RT: Mike McGlinchey (1st rounder)

Meanwhile we were the bottom of the league on both sides of the trenches this year.

Basically what Lynch  said his plan was ...

Yeah but they had the 'luxury' of picking in the top 10 for several drafts, even before Shanahan was there.

Yep. I just can’t believe that after knowingly not resigning Norwell and watching Kalil retire we spent 0 draft capital on G or C when those were so deep. We had Erik McCoy in for a private visit and he ended up being a top 5 center in the NFL for the Saints as a rookie. We, instead, took a flyer on a LT who was very raw and looked terrible at the combine. Rather than take a guy who was likely Ryan Kalil we went for a guy who has as much chance of being Matt Kalil as he does being Gross. I’d take the Ryan Kalil every day of the week and like the chance we have this year, grab a LT who’s way better than Little. Man it would be nice to have a Ryan and Gross combo to go with Turner, Moton and a 2nd or 3rd round LG.

Yea, guards and centers go later in the draft as well and actually tend to be deep. The other thing is centers can usually play guard and their bust rates are lower then tackles as well. I still think Little could be a good tackle as tackles always seem to take a year or two before they perform like you want them to, it's always best to have a Vet in front of them to help and give them that year. I think like with QBs you throw multiple high-mid round picks at guys that have the intangibles but slip for whatever reasons until you hit on one. Alot of people disagree with me, but unless there is a freak athlete LT rated in the top 10 I believe you go in a more for sure positions way because you dont get a top 10 pick often and need to land a Luke or CMC, total once in a decade game changers.
