Joe Brady made him who he is. Without Brady, he's a decent QB. With Brady he wins awards, sets records, and wins a championship.

Discuss this:

Was it 1) the right combo, was it 2) all Burrows, or was it 3) all Brady?

If it was all Burrows, we hired the wrong guy as OC. If it was either of the other two options, then Burrows isn't worth what it would take to get him and we can find another decent QB for Brady to work his magic on.

right!

Out of the 3 options I don’t think you can ever say it’s all the OC, because the qb still has to make the reads and the throws. Doesn’t matter how good the game plan is, if the guy on the field can’t execute it, nothing matters.

I think the fact Burrows was nothing special until Brady shows up suggests the most likely possibility is the right combo. I tend to agree with your reasoning about Burrows not being worth the cost to acquire, although I was already in that boat before anyway.

joe burrow made throws in the national championship game that half the nfl quarterbacks starting in the league can't make with regularity. his touch is next level special and that's the direction that the nfl is moving. it's about putting the ball in locations on the field that the defense can't get to based on their formations. arm strength has to be adequate enough to accomplish that, but there's a reason why 40 year old quarterbacks are able to play in this league and have success. they lost their fastball years ago, but they are able to locate the ball with precision.

Patrick Mahomes didn't and is the best qb drafted by an NFL team in the last several years.  Doing it against college talent, even the best college talent, and doing it in the NFL are two different things.  Burrows may be a good or even great qb in the NFL, but its not a certaintity.

Mahomes put in the same situation would have. Same as Lamar Jackson winning a national championship if given the chance. Some players just don't get to play for Alabama LSU, or Clemson. If you want to say Joe Burrows has peaked I might agree but that doesn't mean he will suck because the dude is a grinder.

Burrow will probably go number one.  Maybe he has a good career, maybe not.

Let's not forget however that the guy is a 5th year senior who transferred.  Couldn't beat out Cardale Jones, JT Barrett or Dwayne Haskins at Ohio State.  In his first year at LSU, threw at a 57% completion rate.

The guy had a terrific year, the best ever.  He even did it against great competition.  But it's one year.  That gives me a lot of pause because the year was SOOOOO out of character for him.

Now, it does speak well for our new OC.  He was the only change on the offensive side for them, and man, that was an impressive season.

He actually lost his spot on the depth chart at Ohio State bc of injury. Then Haskins got the opportunity when Barrett went down and ran with it.

When he got to LSU he looked at it as a job and outworked everybody. The dude had the improvement that he had and the greatest season of all time because he worked harder than everybody else, not just because of talent. I’m 100% on board with a guy like that. He can make all the throws and he’s proven that he has the drive and work ethic already.

That being said, I’d also be fine not giving up a king’s ransom and trying to grab Tua instead.

The truth is that Burrow actually showed signs of this last season.  This narrative that he wasn't that good is simply not true.

First of all, to start the year he was learning a new system, and was unfamiliar with his teammates and their tendencies. So, logic would dictate that there would be and adjustment period.  He also finished the year strong, averaging almost 300 yards passing with 10 TD's with only 1 Int. over the last four games...two of which were top 25 teams, with one being top 10.  Prior to that he had shoulder problems in the middle of the year (including playing the Alabama game with a separated shoulder).

So, the reality is that he did show signs of this development last season.  His numbers were simply skewed because he was transitioning to a new system (which was also not QB friendly, by the way) and injuries.  But you could see the growth as the season went on.  So, his explosion didn't come out of nowhere like many think, he was already trending that way as the season went on.

With that said, I'd be willing to give up a reasonable package to trade up for him, but I don't think the Bengals would give him up for anything less than a team crippling package from us.  So, I would be highly shocked if anything happens.

Interesting, thanks for the background and context.
