We need to be wise with Cam

I'm not saying go all in and mortgage the future, just do what you can...wich is fix our trenches.

I love how you think its just easy to fix 2 of the most important position groups in football.  If you could do this that easy in FA then why dont more teams adopt this method?

Look guys, I get it. Losing sucks. Last season sucked. Nobody wants to watch more of that. And nobody wants to see Newton leave the team unless he's retiring as a Super Bowl champion.

But right now, the Panthers are bad, real bad. They're also starting over with a rookie coach who's going to need some time to get his feet under him. It's likely going to take more than just a few players just to drag them from being "real bad" to "not quite as bad", much less make them "good". All the optimism in the world isn't going to change that.

Tepper advised everybody to be patient, and honestly that's a wise thing to do right now.

Yeah, it sucks for now, but you hope for better things down the road.

I see a lot of Cam loyalty embedded in some responses.  I get it.  However, I try to step back and look at it as a business, and letting Cam play another year may be somewhat beneficial, but the cost makes rebuilding prohibitive.  It practically wastes a season.

I understand why people want Cam back, but I have also predicted what has happened so far (vaguely and arguably) based on the hedge fund manager approach to decision making--what has been successful.  There is another rule in the stock market--don't fall in love with a stock.  While past performance is an indicator of future success, age and batterings from DEs and LBs rarely impacts a stock. If it did, it would be much easier to know when to sell.

If Cam is healthy, you start him and see how the season goes. If he looks good, try to negotiate an extension that's fair to both sides. If he looks uneasy, see if starts to all come together as the season progresses. I don't think a team is going to be willing to risk the capital that we're going to demand in order to trade away the best QB in the team's history.

I'm starting to realize that last year was the last hurrah for the old core, that we went all in to try and get a title before the window closed and the wheels fell off the wagon. I would love to see Cam stay, but only if he is healthy and the system revolves around the skillsets of him and his teammates rather than a system that makes the OC feel like they're smarter than everybody else.

I would love to see Cam be allowed to use his legs again and go with uptempo when he wants to. Whether it's to allow him to truck a defender or keep a play alive so that a target can open up downfield, let the man be who he is.

Not just last season, 2018 as well.  Peppers, TD, Kalil, Cam, Olsen, Luke, etc....all were here for 2018.....and we poo the bed.  Then we tried it one last time....and poo the bed.

This is very similar to what the Giants tried to do in 16, and they poo the bed, and now they have a pretty bad football team.  Saints tried to do it this way a few years ago and were stuck at 7-9 until they went back the right way to do things and focused on the draft.

We tried to milk it a little longer....and it failed.  Not wanting us to try it once again like many around here.

We dont have a choice to do it again, everyone is gone. The saints turned it around with one good draft if I remember correctly and I think we can too with a few FA moves that wont break the bank. If we do move on from Cam, all in saying is, I hope we have someone in mind.

In '12, Alex Smith was traded to the Chiefs for a 2nd-rounder & a conditional pick after a pro bowl season. He was traded again in '18 to the Foreskins for a 3rd-rounder. Again, it was after a pro bowl season.

In '19, Flacco was traded to the Broncos for a 4th-rounder. Flacco had been injury prone & not so hot for the previous 2 seasons.

In '06, Dante Culpepper was traded to the Dolphins for a 2nd-rounder. Culpepper was recovering from ACL, MCL & PCL injuries.

IMO, there is no way in hell a team is going to trade a 1st-rounder for Cam, despite being a former MVP QB. He's been injury prone for the past two seasons & is still recovering. The best we could possibly do is a 3rd-rounder & a 7th-rounder, just like we did with the Bills when we traded Benji.

Unless we trade up for a quality QB who could play right away (Joe Burrow?), keeping Cam for a one year audition is our best option. If Cam stays, Olsen will stay. Same for lots of useful FAs such as McCoy, Boston & Super Mario. They LOVE Cam.

But if Cam goes, they'll all go.

For whatever opinion one may hold in regards to Newton's future with the Panthers. One thing real Panthers fans should be able to come to an understanding on is it would be a travesty to get nothing in return for him at all after what has happened with Kuechly.

If Tepper decides to trade or release Cam he immediately becomes the villain to a large portion of the fan base.

If Cam goes on to be successful on another team, fans will remain pissed off until a new QB wins games and takes the Panthers to the playoffs and beyond.

Agreed. Cam is a beloved player. He SHOULD be healthy this time around and he's had a lot of time to rest his body. He deserves another shot, and the fans deserve to see that too. Make no mistake, if he goes to another he's going to ball out.
