Question about one of Luke's concussions

Will never forget watching that game and that concussion, that word choice only darkens it even more.  Obviously concussions have been a topic in the league for years, but that game drove it home to me how scary and real the issue is. Seeing a super human All-Pro hero figure sobbing and looking lost, man that poo was rough.

I was at that game...I had binoculars and focused in on Luke...will never forget what I saw....he seemed in such distress and there seemed to be so much concern around him. It was so sad to watch.

I had 5 concussions in high school and college football.  As an educator, I study the impact of (psychological) trauma on the brain.  Before MRIs, the only way we were able to understand the impact of physical trauma on the brain was by studying patients with traumatic head injuries.  If a horse kicks your right temple and you lose your ability to taste food, then we assumed that is what functions that part of the brain controls (for example).  However, the impact is not what causes a lot of the damage, it is the "sloshing " of the brain.  So it is impossible to know for sure what causes what reactions.  What I have learned is the parts of the brain and the function.  I had amnesia for two days--I had long term memory, no short term memory.  That suggests that the hippocampus of the limbic system was altered temporarily.  Emotions, as in Luke's case, are usually associated with the front of the neocortex--the area behind his eyes.  It is also near the amygdala, the brain's "panic button/ emergency alarm.  The crying (lack of emotional control) and the fear (possible damage to the amygdala) response alteration could have been impacted.  Since the vision is also right there, it is possible that he literally lost his eyes.

I am not trying to sound like a know it all or act as if I KNOW what happened--this is my speculation and I am not an expert--but his reaction is SO consistent with what I read.

I am wondering this as well about Luke, was there more to it then the concussions? I feel he had to be playing with some other injuries that got worse as the season progressed and hindered his strength and agility. He almost sounded like he felt he was soon to be a liability even though this year imo he still played at a high level, maybe not Luke high, but far above your average MLB. He had to feel some of the runs given up were his fault.....

Yeah I agree and the league had caught on to his ability to make pre-snap reads. Seemed like teams were using his preparation to disguise the play calls.

Me too.  I actually teared up quite a bit.  It was a sad sight

lord knows how many concussions he had in high school and college then in the pros and combine that with the shoulder injuries and I think I read knee as well.

it kills me when the nfl talks about going to 18 games and yet keep the roster at 52, it is almost inhuman.  The body can’t take it

Different levels of concussions!! Hard to rate it!! The NHL is just has violent if not more!! But they don’t cry about it cuz want to take away from the game!! They lose teeth too!! So dental insurance must be high for hockey players!! Check other for occupation

I do not understand one thing--how can a padded knee to the side of the helmet once cause a concussion when boxers wearing no helmet get pounded by a padded fist for 45 minutes?

Yeah, 16 is enough. A wildcard playoff team can still end up playing 20 games under the current format if they go to the SB.
