Not a "massive contract" but I can't fault him for looking out for himself and seeking at least a 1 or 2 year extension with more guaranteed money. I don't know how anyone who cares about Cam would want him to play out his current contract with $0 guaranteed money.

Say he takes a 2 year extension but wins Comeback Player of the Year and MVP in 2020 .. damn Cam is thinking .. shoulda bet on myself

Then he would hit the incentives built into that short term deal and be paid what he should. Works for both sides.

Just, no. What's best for Cam regarding acquiring a massive new deal is to ball in the last year of his contract. He ain't getting a massive new deal right now, from any team.

My scenario was if he plays out his deal in 2020 he is going to want a massive deal going forward.  Why would a team in a rebuild do that?  You still havent answered.

Because if he's healthy enough to be able to play on a big long term contract, we are no longer in 'rebuild' mode.  We are fringe-contenders again.

If Cam is in position to demand a massive contract after next season then it means we're a contender next season and not re-building

If Wilson or Rodgers had an injury the year before they expected to get extended would they be willing to play on a "prove it deal"?  Would the team expect them to?

I find it amusing that some of the biggest Cam fans around here are also the ones expecting him to play on a bad contract.  I can't fault Cam one bit for looking for a good pay day and can't fault the team for not wanting to be the one to do it.

If cam plays and wins say 7 games he is going to want a massive deal.  Thats just the way it is and 7 games is not contending for anything.

I like cam, one of my favorites of all time but damn I can look at things objectively and see them for what they are.

Do you think Rhule is mapping out his plans for the future of this franchise not knowing if cam is healthy or not?  And probably will not know for months.  Come on man its just common sense.  Why in the hell would he shackle himself to this so early on?  He is going to start fresh with his guy and either trade cam or cut him.

All this contract hysteria is just an excuse to get the guy out the door. These "fans" who signed up half an hour ago just to talk about how they want him gone aren't fooling anyone.

Whoever the future QB is going to be for the Carolina Panthers, one thing you can bet the farm on is he will absolutely be getting paid accordingly with the league average sooner rather than later if he is at all worth his salt as a signal caller. This is the NFL, and fans who cannot accept that might as well pack it in now.

Fooling how?

Its not contract hysteria because his deal expires after 2020.  He is going to get a new deal one way or another.  If (big if) he simply plays out his last year, and does it injury free and has a decent year (7 wins max would be my guess) then he is going to want a massive deal.  30+.  Now why would a team in rebuild mode do this?

We won't be in rebuild if Cam is healthy.

Why does that seem to confuse you

What if he plays and wins, say, 10 games?

So wanting him to have a longer term contract = "wanting him out the door"

Wanting him to play on his current lame duck deal with $0 guaranteed money = "being a true Cam Newton fan"

Y'all make no sense. Cam is a top 10 QB and should be compensated as such. If the organization doesn't sit down and work something out with him it is flat out disrespectful and he should find a team that is willing to commit to him.
