Luke’s retirement + cap

Also before anyone tries to pin Kalil’s contract on Hurney because he restructured it, he didn’t give him an extra dime of guaranteed money. He only gave us an out to recoup some(10 million) of the money Gettleman pissed away on him it if for some reason he got suspended or retired.

Of the 22 million in dead cap money,

Matt Kalil is 9.8 of it and Luke is 11.8 of it. We would only have 500k in dead cap if not for those 2 things.

Really hard to pin this on Hurney, unless of course you just don’t like the guy which in that case why not.

How is the Luke portion hard to blame on Hurney, he restructured him in back to back years in 18 and 19?

Because he was a staple of this team?? He freed up cap space to go sign other players while giving Luke Guaranteed money, the safest player on the roster to do so with.

What players did we go get with his freed up money?

Did it lead to wins or a playoff appearance?

Did it bite us in the ass?

Did he do the exact same thing to Trai?

Did he do the exact same thing to KK?

It's not smart business, yet Hurney continues to do so, even when it bit him in the ass the last go round.

He either doesn't understand the nature of football, doesn't understand the cap, or a combo.

Every GM restructure contracts.

I can’t argue that the extra cap space didn’t ultimately work out in terms of wins.

However there’s other factors at play. The money did allow us to sign Gerald McCoy.
Many huddles were ecstatic by that addition and it improved the roster. Which is the GM’s job to improve the roster.

The coaches job is to maximize the talent given.

Rivera couldn’t and it cost him his job. Hurney did enough to win Teppers confidence and kept his job.

I doubt you see any backtracking in light of this

I wonder if the team just renegotiates and converts it all to bonus as a parting gift to free up things for us

He’s probably aware of that. But based on his post history, he likes to blame everything on Hurney! He wants Hurney’s performance to seem worse than reality says it is.

When we suck, people want heads to roll and Hurney has been a hated man on here for a while. I’d say about half the hate is justified and half is just easier on their minds to blame Hurney for poo out of his control.

Hurney is forever thinking we are a singular player away from a playoff run, it's been that way since his first day here.

I'm not beating him up for the Luke restructure (too bad), I have howled at the KK and Trai extensions, those were as dumb as you can get.  Both are underperforming, older, expensive already, and in no way shape or form should have been restructured.

Luke's situation was a little better, but still not very smart knowing his concussion history.

To say that you can't blame Hurney is wrong, he pulled the trigger, now the team is paying the price.....even if "everyone's doing it".

there's two misconceptions thus board has about the GM position, both probably stemming from the pervasive belief that Dave Gettleman was doing a good job as the GM of Carolina Panthers

1) restructuring contracts is bad

2) GMs get 2-3 good players at minimum out of every draft

The first is easily explained: Dave gettleman would rather just let great players and stock up on cap space to hoard because he didn't understand the current market

The second, I suspect, has to do with how invested panther fans are in the draft.

When you know your GM isn't going to do anything in free agency, people get desperate for every draft to garner  unrealistic returns out of a class.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
