Holy Cow Our Dline Situation.. How the fug Do We Fix This??

Of that bunch, I roll with:

  • Kawann Short DT : (31)  [20 Million]
  • Efe Obada DE : (29) [660,000]
  • Brian Burns DE : (22) [3 Million]
  • Christian Milller DE : 24 [768,000]
  • Kyle Love DT : (33) [Free Agent]

Cutting Poe and Olsen (hopefully retiring) adds almost $20M to our current $30M = $50M in cap space.

I'd sign Shaq Lawson (probably around $8-10M/year) and draft Derrick Brown.

Wildcard here would be Brian Burns...... is he the next Danielle Hunter or does he fit better at OLB a la Anthony Barr? If he's a DE then your starters are set... Burns - KK - Brown - Lawson

I think Miller can be a solid OLB in a 43. We'd have to find depth but starters are good to go, IMO with this lineup.

I just don't see the absolute mess you described.  Especially if they add Brown.  Get Short and Poe back healthy and its a good front seven.  Not every player is a pro bowler.  Sorry.

But in your scenario should be paid like one.

Between free agency, the draft and UDFAs they’ll fill that unit out. Matt Rhule and his staff did a good job of developing less polished players at Temple and Baylor so I wouldn’t be surprised if they find some young talent on cap friendly deals that can step in and compete.

The question with that move is, is there a DT available as a FA for less than the 9 million in savings that you think will be better than Poe?

If yes than cut, if no, suck it up and fix other things now and worry about his replacement later. This team has too many holes to burn a high draft pick it sorely needs to spend fixing the o line on a position that primarily stops the run.

If whoever who start at qb next year has to do so behind the same line we trotted out this year, whether that is Cam or a rookie, there will be long term consequences to that players health and/or development. If we suck against the run next year, oh well, we sucked against the run in a year in which no one expected us to be good. Still fixable in next years draft.

We may have had the worst dline in the NFL.  While its not all on Poe, its hard to imagine that we couldn't get someone for less who wouldn be any worse.  Of course, it depends to an extent on who we draft.  If we get the Auburn kid, Poe might be expendable, allowing us to spend the cap savings somewhere else.

hey then...

Carolina is in full rebuilding mode.  Trading away assets that have value now makes sense.  Trade Cam newton for a 2020 2nd round pick.  Trade Luke Kuechly for a 2020 2nd round pick.  package #7 and a 2nd to move up and take Burrow.  you now have 2 remaining 2nd rounders to pick up OT/OG or even move back into the 1st round.

Ah, duh. There's a reason why I have been beating the drum the past two years for interior OL and last draft for interior DL instead of spending great picks on projects that don't play at all and gigantic reaches when a Ryan Kalil plug and play replacement for 10 years is staring you right in your ugly ass face (not you you, you know who you). It's why I haven't really liked Marty's drafts other than Burns, Moore and Thomas (he was talked about pre-draft).

We had two drafts to replace Kalil and Norwell and find 2020 replacements for Poe and Short and we did nothing.

It was me!!! I can't hide any longer!!i love you crying GIF

Seriously, I agree 100%.  You build from the inside out, front to back.  Marty (in my opinion) goes after players he knows will be successful and neglects key positions (historically, DT, OG).  Our guards, for example, aside from third rounder Turner, have always been, "Lets throw as many turds against the wall and see what sticks."

It is SO HARD to pass on the QB when the opportunity arises, but there are few QBs that can come in and immediately make you better if the pieces are not in place.  Cam did it here, and Gettlemen/Marty neglected the basics knowing that he could overcome them-

If we take the future QB in the draft, do not plan to start him until the OL and the Defense is ready.  People fail to see the relationship between a QB and the defense.  Field position is one, but making a young QB play from behind is horrible.  The DL pins their ears back and they rush with little concern for run support.  The QB has no options--play action does not work and they know he is struggling to read as quickly as a veteran.  That is why so many first round QBs fail.

And it is the difference between 4-game-win-streak Kyle Allen and the-rest-of-the-season Kyle Allen.  When the defense fell apart, so did the QB.  It exposed Allen's shortcomings.

So build the lines, keep Cam for at least one more season, and put the next franchise QB in position to be successful.

Lot of free agents. Way too much money tied up into KK and Poe. I see alot of dudes in their 30s.

What do you predict the Panthers will do about this? What would you do if you were GM? (two different questions)

Here's some info (age is player age by the time 2020 season starts)  [Cap hit in 2020]

I did include pass rushing OLBs as DEs as well . Let me know if im missing people.

  • Kawann Short DT : (31)  [20 Million]
  • Dontari Poe DT :  (30) [13 Million ]
  • Efe Obada DE : (29) [660,000]
  • Mario Addison DE : (32) [500,000]
  • Brian Burns DE : (22) [3 Million]
  • Christian Milller DE : 24 [768,000]
  • Vernon Butler DT: (26)  [Free Agent]
  • Gerald McCoy DT  : (32) [Free Agent]
  • Kyle Love DT : (33) [Free Agent]
  • Wes Horton DE : (30) [Free Agent]
  • Bruce Irvin DE : (33) [Free Agent]

I can see why like 80% of mock drafts have us selecting Derrick Brown DT Auburn. Our DT situation is pretty bleak and needs some serious infusion of youth and talent. We cant just rely on a still very young Burns to be our primary pass rusher.

IMO you can't keep both Poe and Short, you can NOT have 33 million dollars of your cap in 2 aging DTs its unacceptable.

I know Butler had that crazy episode this year but he did well production wise, and most notably hes the one young DT we have on the roster . Would he be worth resigning for a reasonable deal? I don't think he'll get massive offers based off 1 year of production.

That Short contract is ridiculous.  I would guess Poe is a gone--he was better in the 3-4 than the 4-3.  I am not sure Butler comes back--they may let him flounder around through free agency and then offer a cheap deal to him, but we will see what Rhule says. FWIW, I think Rhule might be the kind of coach he needs.
