Nepotism will torpedo the Matt Rhule era before it starts

Our previous head coach stuck with comfortable bros he had worked with for way too long and it tanked the team into oblivion.

Although he has not done so yet, all indications are that Matt Rhule is bringing in all guys he has worked with before to fill out the staff. Not sure if he will be interviewing any other coaches from around the league to fill his staff. But I hope so.

I think Sean Ryan from the Lions looks like a strong up and comer and could be a great hire as offensive coordinator. At least he has been working away from Rhule for a bit to continue growing as a coach.

I think hiring Phil Snow, a retirement age journeyman coach who has never had success at the NFL level seems like a failure of a hire. He is 64 years old and has never coached anything more than the linebacker position at the NFL level, for the 0-16 2008 Lions of all teams.

I hope Tepper or someone from the Panthers staff is reading this. Don't hire who is comfortable!!! Get outside the box. The last coaching staff did what was comfortable. For the love of god and all that is holy, don't make the same mistakes of the last coach.

EDIT: Adding the definition of "nepotism" since it seems necessary based on the responses so far.

Hey more power to you man. But it seems pretty likely that team officials are at least scanning this board and getting a pulse of the fanbase. Now is the time for change. Now is the time to get your opinion out there.

I just don't want this team to do the same exact thing the old hard-headed coach did and see the same failures yet again. We had two straight decades of the same old sh!t.

This isn't a good take, man. You are usually solid with threads but this isn't it. Stop throwing record around like it matters for what he was coaching. If you were the QB coach of the Broncos the year Manning was trash but they won the SB!!! it wouldn't mean you are a good QB coach. He coached LBs and if you looked at their team, two of their LBs were the only good thing on that defense.

He took two lesser schools to a top 20 defense out of almost 140 schools, 4 times in his 7 years as a DC for Rhule. Everyone celebrates Rhule as an offensive guy but he was a top 50 offense just once. This DC was top 20 4 times. That is super impressive in college.

That's great, I agree that looks awesome. But, why was he never bumped up to the NFL? The guy is 64 years old. What gives? If he's hired as defensive coordinator I want that addressed. I get sometimes it doesn't work out because of timing or fit but, you'd think after FOUR DECADES as a coach he would have made it up to the pros as more than a positional coach on one of the worst teams in the history of football.

The conversation at Rhule’s home that led to his hiring was a long one and obviously went really well. What your post brings up that makes me uneasy is did it include any discussion of how Rhule would approach hiring his staff?

If it did not, that should be a mark against Tepper and Hurney for not being thorough. If it did and Rhule said I’ll bring some of my guys from Baylor with me, I would hope there would have been a conversation about how they felt Rons habit of sticking with those he was familiar and comfortable with became part of the problem.

I have a not so great feeling this important part of the interview didn’t happen.

Yeah, let's at least dwell in the afterglow of the hire for a while, even if it turns out to be blissful ignorance. I'd rather give the guy a chance. He's our coach now, and he's only just been hired. Let the man work. You can crucify him after we're 0-1.

I hope it did because they said the interview was like 5 hours long, but Marty was apparently stuffing his face with meatballs so who the hell knows.

Because when he made the jump to the NFL he choose poorly and picked the Lions who went out and won 0 games. NFL for many years has only hired the same group of coaches over and over.

Just because someone hasn't coached a lot in NFL doesn't mean they can't coach.

You’re saying to think outside the box but you’re knocking the hiring of one of the best DCs in college football because he’s never had a legit opportunity in the NFL.

Rhule is not Rivera. Weather he is better or worse remains to be seen, but he doesn’t seem the type to hold on to ideals at the cost of winning.
