David Tepper: "Sometimes you have to tear things down to build them up"

It is the NFL, so I wouldn't say anyone is "untouchable." We do know that Marty has a bad habit of sticking with players past their expiration date, so I wouldn't be surprised to see that core stick around for a while.

I do not understand the need to tear it all apart though.

I just don't see them letting go of any of those guys, maaaaybe Cam (I certainly hope not).  I think the defense will be ripped to shreds.

Not a good year to move on from Cam as there won’t be any replacements in the draft when we pick. It makes more sense to see if he can bounce back this year, then make a decision.

If you decide to move Cam, I think at that point you look into moving up in the draft. A lot of that will depend on what kind of grades they have on QB's. Let's keep in mind Marty had a first round grade on Will Grier, so don't expect much.

This is just an example of underpromise and try to over deliver.  Pretty standard in any business operation.  I am sure when KC drafted Mahomes they didn't expect to do so well so fast. We have many pieces for a good team already in place.

Yeppp, its the smart thing to do. Set expectations low. We can build a competitive team next season.

The upsides of trading the Lukes and CMCs of the world also have to do with being able to draft at more valuable positions than LB and RB, building the team to Rhule's vision and process (even if you think his process is bullshit at least we know he values athletes and the LOS and thats a good base regardless), and the influx rookie contracts allowing for more FA moves.   I can see the pros to keeping them and trading them, but as always i'm spooked by Hurney.  I do think CMCs eventually going to be a ticking time bomb of a contract if we dont quickly learn how to use him less though.

It's going to be a dicey offseason because we have a delicate cap dance with so many starters being free agents. So we will have TONS of needs if we don't make some re-signings. Factor in that we have 3-5 guys with big contracts that could get cut and generate a lot of cap room for us.

when was the last time Luke missed significant playing time though?  for better or worse this is really a "what have you done for me lately" league.

It isn't fair, but then again that's life and sports. Ask yourself why it's fine for some to forever link Cam to "0-8" despite anything else he's done in the past yet Luke isn't directly tied to the worst run defense the league has seen in years.

This is what I expect to happen.  Greg Olsen alone will save us 9 mil.  I bet we keep our core, and sign a bunch of young players who are really talented, but really need to be coached up.  I think we could easily trade some of our marginal players for draft picks in the 5-7 rounds, and I think we will try to get a bunch of comp picks too.

We assume that many of our free agents will want to be here and that might not be true if they think this is a rebuild. Expect guys like Olsen, McCoy among others to be looking at other teams unless they think Rhule can build this quickly. Which they might given how quickly he turned around both Temple and Baylor

Trading Luke doesn't really have a lot of upside to me. His contract his relatively high but he will probably end up with a lower top 10(projected) salary for ILB's in 2020 and potentially outside the top 10 in 2021. His salary seems high on the surface but that contract(I suspect) will actually age pretty well. CMC, the damage is already done. He's produced and is the type of dual threat weapon that is going to command a top 5 RB contract. And, frankly, it is something we should absolutely not give him. If we can get out for a sub-top 5 contract, I'd love to keep him for 3-5 more years. But, we have used him at such a rate that he is very, very, very likely to experience a breakdown eventually. Ron basically used him like he did Cam, ran him into the ground. Not to mention, if we DO decide to move on from Cam, CMC will be a valuable asset and safety valve for a learning QB. Probably something we would want to keep around(at the right price) to make things easier on a new QB.

Trading JAG's for 5-7 round draft picks is not likely to happen, nor likely to improve the team at all. The success rate of 5-7 round draft picks is pretty atrocious. No one builds a good roster from 5-7 round draft picks.
