Marty on Rhule and Cam Newton status

He has had a LONG time to rest the shoulder.  That should be the least of his worries by now.

Caroline Cann actually raised the question of whether it was healthy or not during the radio spot where she was talking about Eric Bieniemy.

Cam has put his body on the line for this organization and willed them to victory over and over and over. I would seriously hate for them to turn their back on him now. With the time he has had off and rest he could come back rejuvenated and better than ever next year. I would hate to see that Cam on another team. It would piss me off that we didn't give him the opportunity to prove himself and just kicked him out the door. Players get injured, players go on IR. Cam has made it clear he wants to be in Carolina. You won't find anyone with more heart or love for the game than Cam. Give him a chance to show you what he's got and I'm pretty sure you're not gonna be disappointed.

Can't argue the first thing I bolded, but Devil's advocate:

Cam showed us what he had in 2018 and the first two games of 2019. I was extremely disappointed. He was hurt and playing hurt, hurt the team.

Cam is the greatest QB we've ever had. Nothing changes that. But to over look the injury concern is short sighted. He could bounce back and remain healthy for years to come. OR he could never recover 100% and be done as an NFL player. Its all a crap shot at this point. Cam is a gamble at this point. If you can't see that, you're lying to yourself.

The only thing that I see as a problem is that Rhule is that he was completely unprepared to take a NFL job. That doesn't mean that things won't work out but it's going to put us behind and we have the draft in 3 and half months. That's 14 weeks to get a staff and a program together for the year.

Rhule might end up being a great hire, but I would temper expectations for 2020.

Hiring someone like Rhule only makes sense if we are in full rebuild mode.  Teams that have rebuilt and been successful 4-5 years later pretty much have done everything possible to stock pile draft picks.

I think you are lying to yourself if you think a relatively minor foot injury (which he had surgery to fix) is going to somehow be a career ender for Cam Newton.

This could go 1 of 3 ways.

1.We either decided to blow things up and do a complete rebuild right now

2. We give it another year with Cam and if things are looking up then we can talk about extending him before he hits free agency.

3. We give it another year with Cam, for whatever reason it fails, then we blow everything up and start the rebuild process.

I think option 2 and 3 are most likely.

The goal for everyone involved from the owner to down to the fans have a consistent winning team. Given the 7 year contract and the cost of buying out Rhule's contract from Baylor, plus paying the final year of Rivera's contract, Tepper has made a huge commitment to get the ball rolling on getting this thing back on track.

I think while the answers given were vague in regards to Cam and the rest of the roster, they were honest. Tepper, Hurney and Rhule I'm sure are going to be having some honest conversations once Rhule gets up to speed and dissects the roster.

1st question: Can we have a winning season this year? A healthy Cam no doubt increases the chances of that happening. Even with a healthy Cam and brining back Bradberry, drafting well and landing a starter or 2 in free agency is that possible for this year?

They first must determine that. If they conclude things are so bad, then they may go ahead and rip the band aid off and salvage what they can out of Cam's trade value.

The next order of business is to decide how long will it take for us to get a roster capable of winning without him. If its not this year and potentiality the next, is there any reason to re-sign Bradberry to an extension or be aggressive in free agency?

I think the safest play would be to, roll with Cam one more year, franchise Bradberry for the year and be either sign aging vets to 1 year deals and only commit big money to free agents who can help the team for multiple years to come. If things trend up, then you lock up anyone who contributes to it long term.

Then there's the draft. I think Hurney feels safe enough for the first time in a long time, to where he doesn't have to go into win now mode. We may even see him trade back to accumulate picks for the future.

Lisfranc injuries are always tricky. They are VERY easily re injured. They dont always heal right. Its very concerning. So idk what the hell you talking about...

We all seem to forget that the entire organization is in FUL rebuild (not retool) mode. This is going to be per Mr. Tepper a minimum of 3 year up to 5 year process for a sustained program to be put into place.

Honestly, I have to believe that Cam and those close to him will contemplate to the Nth degree if a continued path with the overhaul of the Carolina Panthers is in his beat interest at 31 year of age.

And if ESPN is totally accurate..... Cam is set to count (20) million against the cap versus a (2) million dollar cap hit If they were to release him. I only see the option of releasing Cam should he not be fully healed. I can see them attempting to trade him to a contender that could use a healthy Cam towards their playoff aspirations.

Probably this is a one year prove it opportunity for Cam. Prove it to Tepper and Ruhle. I don't think Hurney would have much say in the end as it involves (2) factors. Does Tepper feel the investment after one year into Cam is worth it.... and/or Coach Ruhle sees Cam as a fit for his offense with built in analytics.

***Even if Cam is traded - I still see it as a one year prove it opportunity as I suspect Cam seeks to be well compensated commensurable with the elite QBs. ***

So let's presume Cam is healthy and both sides want to exercise the (1) year prove it option. If I am Cam, I don't want any part of that scenario.  A rebuild that projects to last up (5) years, And let's be real, there will be a QB drafted.  Maybe not this year but there will be.

I think the 900 pound elephant in the room is this question:  Will Cam receive the extension he desires before the upcoming season from the Panthers.
1) If that occurs, then we have zero cause to be at odds with each other here (as we so often are).

2) If that does not occur, then all of the aforementioned is genuinely plausible.

My gut says that when it comes time to make a decision Cam will ask to be released and the team will grant it.  A mutual parting of the ways.

this is what i think too.   i think cam asks for a release because they won't offer him an extension.  who knows though right?   at least we're possibly headed in the right direction now instead of being positive we weren't w/ ronco

They heal in 6-8 after surgery. From what I understood they easily get re injured if they heal without a procedure

    • Who mentioned anything about money? I said they are bad people. When you have that kind of power you tend to be a jerk. It's common that most rich people think they are above everyone else.   It's why these owners always get caught up in some scandal. There are more than we know about trust me. Some pay off people to keep quiet. Hell we already dealt with it with JR. My issue is not with their wealth. My issue is what that wealth brings which can be some evil tendencies...
