He makes a good point. You're in nickel and dime subpackages so much that 4-3/3-4 doesn't really matter. Last year the Panthers primarily ran 4-2-5.

We have been primarily Nickle for the last 4 or 5 years now. However, that 3-4 from last year where each OLB was on the line of scrimmage had more holes than swiss cheese, if it were underwear it would whistle when you walked by.

anyway this is not good news for burns since now they are going to be asking him to adjust to a skill set he was not projected to play when he was coming out of college. he was looking like a natural fit as a 3-4 OLB, and at this point he’s either going to put on weight and flourish as a down lineman or go totally everette brown on the edge

great long game thinking there marty

So the head coach tells the GM "Listen...we're making a desperate switch to a 3-4 on a whim but have none of the pieces/talent for it, so I'm gonna need you to go out and get some" and the GM does his job and acquires some pieces to fit his coach's system, only for that coach to get fired and for the new coach to switch back to the old alignment...that's on the GM?

Coach, we don't have the pieces to switch to a 34 this offseason, we need to stick with what we have and bolster it through the draft and free agency.

That is how a good GM/HC relationship is supposed to go.

Marty, I want to switch to a 34.  OK, give me a minute, I have a little room left on the Master Card.

That is how a bad GM/HC works.

Exactly right.

Rhule has a 7 year contract. It takes time to turn a barge.

I plan on treating this team much like an expansion team now with low expectations and excitement for what is being built.

Be honest, amIgo, you’re dying for us to get Trevor Lawrence next year, like many others secretly are, right? Damn would this team have a bright bright future with him and Rhule. Still skeptical on Hurney but I’m willing to be open on it for a few years.

Burns, Haynes, Christian Miller, Irvin, etc are all better off in 34

We were 2nd in the NFL in sacks

It's much easier and cheaper to fix run defense than finding pash rushers;  this is dumb

The fact that this is true and we still had a bottom 5 defense in the league should be enough to convince you that sacks don't mean great defense.

at best that just further proves my point that keeping the GM after firing your head coach is a dumb idea

at worst this is another one of the huddle illiterati’s built in excuses for marty every time offseason plans or personnel investments don’t work out

Lots of discussion on the defensive part of what he said but I'm surprised no one has brought up how he was again VERY NON COMMITTAL about Cam Newton and the state of the Panthers Qb position AGAIN in this short clip. Looks like we'll have to finally come around to the fact Newton will not be the Panthers starting Qb of 2020. I know he hasn't come out and said that word for word but it does appear the writing is on the wall.

In before Burns is a "wasted" pick comments

Wasted? No.

The kids just eat up with talent.  Period.

But I really don’t care if he puts on that extra 20 lbs and gets up to 260, he ain’t built to play 4-3 DE.  He’s just not.

So wasted pick? No.

Hurney/Rivera desperation pick? Without a single doubt.

Rofl, I admire the commitment sir.

As for Burns, dude was a DROY front runner halfway through the season before his snaps got mysteriously taken away. People want to act like having a smaller DE like him was the reason our run defense was so bad, but our run D was arguably worse in the 2nd half of the season when he barely played.

Dudes one of the most athletic players on the field at any given time, you don’t just cut ties with that because your former coach would rather kiss his vets ass so they say nice things about him to help him get another HC gig.

I don't know how you can listen to that vid snippet of Rhule and talk about trading Burns or how he was a mistake selection.

Burns fits the cutting edge, explosive mold that he wants to put on the field. Combine that with his previous comments about paying attention to players "numbers/metrics" as much as tape and Burns is not going anywhere. Rivera under-utilized Burns and he can be a huge factor for our defense moving forward. Whether it's in a Barr/Miller OLB way, or a Hunter/Ngakoue DE way - this coach will find ways to maximize Burns' impact.

Its his second day.  He is non committal about most things, as he should be.

Except when dealing with your "franchise" quarterback. Listen, there has been speculation for MONTHS about if Cam was going to be on this team next year. And a lot of that was going to come down to the coach we hired. You'd think if Cam was going to be a major part of this team going forward they would have discussed that in the interview and it would have been one of the main points of attraction in their discussion. Rhule wants to rebuild, it's what he's known for. You don't rebuild with a 31 year old Qb coming off a major injury. He's been noncommittal about the FACE OF THE PANTHERS FRANCHISE for the last 10 years. This isn't some 2nd or 3rd year Qb. If he wanted Cam to be here and was excited to get a chance to work with Cam his answers would undoubtedly be different. This is the type of stuff he'd say if he was seriously considering moving on from Cam, which he is.
