I had read somewhere(may have been huddle) that strength coach Joe Kenn was safe, can anyone confirm that? I was a HUGE supporter til this season of sorry-ness by both lines. Not good joe, not good.

I've seen it speculated. The Panthers are said to like him.

Nothing confirmed, though.

How many first time NFL head coaches get their staff completely right, though?

If, for example, we had an OC that was performing like Shula but Rhule refuses to fire him... Well, we've seen that movie.

True but I think he'll do a nice job putting it  together

I hope he does.

I know Tepper is gonna give rule a long leash, so let's hope he earns it.

Question for you? How do you feel that from how Tepper sounded that this was a Hurney hire? Granted Tepper agreed with him but still sounded like he gave Hurney rein on the interviews and such.

I'll be honest. The way he describes it playing out concerns me.

I have zero confidence in Marty as a decision maker. And to be honest, Tepper hasn't exactly done much to sell me on the notion that he's a smart football guy either. Not at this point, anyway.

And then you have Rhule, who's super charismatic, even though his qualifications may or may not be of the highest order.

So he sells himself to Marty, to Tepper, to Drummond (aside, why is a communications guy in on this process, exactly?) and suddenly, we don't need to see anybody else. Here we are.

That scene reminds me of watching a super slick insurance salesman telling your somewhat gullible older relative just how badly they need this expensive life insurance policy, and them hanging on every word.

I absolutely hope it comes out good, but the way Tepper describes how it happened made me cringe.

I took it the same way honestly and I dont completely hate Hurney as a GM. So I understand any trepidation anyone has

Do you really think Tepper is that gullible? We also know they'd spoken to McCarthy and Bienimy prior to Rhule, so he definitely had a frame of reference and points of comparison. Sometimes if you know, you know.

That he puts any confidence whatsoever in Marty Hurney tells me he doesn't know as well as I wish he did.

And he certainly wouldn't be the only billionaire team owner to make terrible football decisions.

It’s not a question of gullibility. I’m in sales. All effective sales techniques are predicated on emotion, not reason. Some of them are powerful enough that in the hands of a particularly adept salesman, and make no mistake all preachers and coaches are salesmen, even if you know the technique being used on you, it still works.

Most decisions are based in emotion. We tell ourselves they are based in reason, but overwhelmingly, they are not. It is entirely possible that Tepper’s decision was more cognitive. He did already have a frame of reference. Rhule does seem to fit what he’s looking for. The meeting lasted for several hours and it’s possible Tepper went in thinking “If he ch3cks these boxes, I’m gonna offer before we leave.” and that was his decision rule.

But the way things are coming across atm don’t create that impression, even going on Tepper’s own words. And I think that is what gives some folks pause.
