A place to post news updates about assistant coach hires and fill in the staff chart as they happen...

Pretty much all speculation at this point, but it's fair to note that Rhule's history has been one of loyalty. He took a lot of his Temple coaching staff with him to Baylor. Will he now take them to the NFL? Maybe. Some of them actually do have NFL coaching experience. There are also options from his year with the Giants, and even a few from Ron Rivera's Panthers staff and of course, outside the box choices also.

It's hoped that Rhule will add at least one former NFL head coach to his staff to help him with the transition. Technically, Perry Fewell fits that role but there are probably better options.

So for now, here's a look at some of the current speculation, with spots to be filled in as info comes out.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR: The Panthers have hired LSU Passing Game Coordinator Joe Brady.

QB Coach: Baylor QB Coach Glenn Thomas worked with Rhule at both Temple and Baylor and was a QB Coach for the Atlanta Falcons for 4 years prior. Ryan could fit here too if Brady is the OC. Update: The Panthers are interviewing Ben McAdoo and Mike McCoy for this spot. McCoy could also serve as a receiver coach if desired. Scott Linehan's name has also surfaced as a possibility here.

Assistant QB Coach: The Panthers are reported to be hiring Matt Lombardi, a former Baylor quality control coach most recently on staff with the Miami DolphIns.

RB Coach: Panthers are said to want to keep Jake Peetz because of his work with McCaffrey, but probably won't force it. Jeff Nixon is his RB Coach at Baylor. Update: Joe Person confirmes the Panthers are retaining Jake Peetz in this role.

WR Coach: Frisman Jackson also followed Rhule from Temple to Baylor after spending a year with the Titans. He's a former NFL receiver with the Browns and Jets. Update: Jackson has been confirmed as the new Panthers receiver coach by Alaina Getzenberg. His personal Twitter also reflects this.

TE Coach: Marcus Satterfield has known Rhule since his Western Carolina days (no pro coaching experience). Former Giants colleague Kevin Gilbride Jr was recently let go by the Bears and has been runored as a potential Panthers hire by Alex Marvez.

OL Coach: Rhule's Baylor line coach is former Baylor player Shawn Bell (class of 16).  Old Giants colleague Pat Flaherty is available and has been rumored to be a candidate by Albert Breer. The Panthers requested to interview Saint assistant OL coach Brendan Nugent but were blocked.

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR: Predicted to be Baylor DC Phil Snow, though some speculation has mentioned longtime NFL DC Wade Phillips (no connections to Rhule that I've found) Update: Snow is now official.

DL Coach: Neither of Baylors DL Coaches seem like serious candidates and his old Giants colleague is under contract with the Jets. Is former Panther Julius Peppers a possibility? Update: Colts DL Coach Mike Phair, who worked under expected DC hire Phil Snow, is being reported to have accepted the job.

Assistant DL Coach: Baylor DL Coach Frank Okam is reportedly being hired in this role.

LB Coach: Current Baylor LB Coach Mike Siravo was at Boston College when Luke Kuechly was there but didn't coach him.  There's also two guys named Al. Rhule's old Temple boss Al Golden was recently let go from his linebacker coaching job in Detroit and former Panthers/Browns LB Coach Al Holcomb worked with Rhule in 2012. Update: Al Holcomb is being hired under the title of "Defensive Run Game Coordinator". David Smoak says Siravo is coming too so we'll have to see how that's arranged.

DB Coach: Phil Snow was the safeties coach and Baylor's corner coach is inexperienced. Recent Panthers DB Coach Perry Fewell is acquainted with Rhule from his time as Giants DC, so he could be an option. Update: Also per ESPN's David Smoak, Baylor's Evan Cooper is going to be coaching cornerbacks.

SPECIAL TEAMS COACH: Baylor ST Coach Mike Siravo is also their linebacker coach. An intriguing option could also be Chase Blackburn who was a linebacker on the 2012 Giants roster. Former Dolphins LB Larry Izzo was with Rhule on the Giants staff and is currently the assistant ST coach in Seattle.

Strength and Conditioning Coach: the Panthers are said to want to keep Joe Kenn. Update: Smoak says Baylor S&C coach Jeremy Scott is joining the Panthers but it's unknown in what title. Could be Kenn's assistant or his replacement. Looking now like he'll be his replacement. Kenn's contract with the Panthers is up at the end of January and Scott's Twitter now lists him as the Panthers strength coach.

Trainer: Mark Shermansky has been the Panthers assistant trainer under Ryan Vermillion since 2002 and may be promoted since Vermillion's departure.

Others: Rhule's old boss Tom Coughlin could be an option in some sort of consultant role to help Rhule transition to the NFL. Also being reported that Baylor Associate Athletic Director Sean Padden has said goodbye to Baylor via tweet. He could potentially join Rhule's staff in some capacity.

Wait... Chase Blackburn is our current ST Coach and sucks at it.

We are in serious trouble if he really brings in his buddy Phil Snow as DC.

Position coach is one thing, DC would be a huge gamble.

He needs to surround himself with and OC and DC that have years of NFL experience.

I like the Sean Ryan hire.

we're not in trouble man.   we've now got a dad who can buy our way out of anything.

Sean Ryan has never called plays but you’re fine with that and not fine with Phil Snow? That seems strange.

I’m not thrilled by either of these guys but Ryan seems to have more upside. Given that he has actually paved his own way in the league and had success as a QB coach.

All we know about Phil Snow is he was a position coach of the worst team ever, has jumped around from small college to small college and is now following Rhule around.

Just seems extremely lackluster of a hire, especially with the way Voth was hyping his staff up on Twitter yesterday.

I agree if we are going with inexperienced nfl play caller I’d rather have a young, smart defensive coordinator learning along with Sean Ryan on the offensive side. The way this is shaping up screams rebuild and patience. No need to have a 64 year old DC. Get someone young, smart and hungry on the defensive side to learn and grow.

I'm with you.  At the very least we will need some "special advisors" to help out, who have lots of NFL experience.  These guys are going to get their lunch ate after midseason if they decide to go with a bunch of inexperienced guys at key positions.  I do like Sean Ryan's NFL experience, it should help.

I've always felt like OCs should be young and innovative and DCs should be old and crusty, because defense is more of a reactive thing and they need to have seen alot of different things in their career to be able to predict what the offense might do next or how to adjust to certain wrinkles the offense might put in.  That's just how I've always looked at it.

One cool thing about having an inexperienced playcaller is people don't have a book on him yet, so he can have some early success catching defenses by surprise.

Never thought of this. I like it.

My problem is that Snow has never had any measure of success in the NFL. was hoping for a splash hire at DC.

Oh well.

Hoping for the best.

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
