They are guaranteed though.

If he stinks so bad he's fired in two years, we'll still be paying him for the remaining five.

This is true, but again, Tepper is making literally hundreds on millions annually off his existing money.  In that context, the money is not meaningless but it is statistically insignificant.

Tepper knows the one time (and practically only thing) he can't but is time.

Tepper is going to give Rhule time to succeed, but I do not for a minute think money is going to stand in the way of him making a change if he thinks it's necessary.

I don't think money had anything to do with keeping Ron 1 more year... I think Tepper respected Ron and truly wanted to give him another chance to prove he had the team moving in the right direction.  When it became evident he didn't, Tepper moved on.

Good point which brings up the question. If he struggles and Tepper delays firing him, is it because Tepper is giving Rhule time or doesn't want to burn that money.

Teppers money doesnt effect the cap who cares.

Yep he did what he had to to get a top candidate, if that’s what it took. He has the money to do it and is willing to pay whatever he needs to to make this team perennially successful. This is a good sign. Also has already shown he’s willing to get rid of a coach who’s still under contract with Ron so if this hire does flop the 7 years means nothing. (Though I’m confident he’ll last that long and more with consistent success and our first SB win)
