Regarding Vermillion, Ben Standig pointed out that Redskin players had been complaining about their training staff under old trainer Larry Hass for years.

Oh boy...out of the frying pan into the fire.

I guess by Ron taking Matsko with him he feels that it was a lack of talent on the line and not a lack of coaching...

Ron never blames the coaches. It’s always the players. The players he had direct input in bringing in.

From The Washington Post

Quote

Many coaches, executives and agents around the NFL believe Rivera soon will have an offensive coordinator and it could be the team’s current coordinator, Kevin O’Connell. But O’Connell is also believed to be a candidate to join the staff of New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels if McDaniels is hired as head coach of another team. Rivera has contacted Pat Shurmur, who recently was fired as head coach of the New York Giants, about Washington’s coordinator job if things don’t work out with O’Connell.

Shurmur and Del Rio would be a pretty potent coordinator team.

Sounds like Scott Turner might be more likely to get the QB Coach job.

And remember Hitman Harris?

Quote

Sirius XM NFL host Alex Marvez said Sunday that Los Angeles Chargers assistant defensive backs coach Chris Harris will be Rivera’s secondary coach.

It's both the line has sucked since Gross retired and then Ryan Khalil. It's the staff's fault for never bring in talent and letting Cam get killed.

Dipping into the front office too...

If I recall correctly, Rogers has been with the Panthers even longer than Marty Hurney has.

I'm assuming Rodgers is the one who negotiates and structures the contracts? Someone from Over The Cap made reference a few weeks ago to how the Panthers structure contracts as "archaic".

If I've got a choice between John Matsko and Bill Callahan, I'm taking Bill Callahan without question.

You're correct. And I looked it up, he's been here since 1995.

Washington to Rivera.

But in all seriousness, Ron needs to come get his boy. Him not hiring him on would be a serious blow to Washington. Here, you’ve got Rivera going after everyone of his old buddies, but he’s not coming after you?

Yeah, Ron has taken so many guys that it's officially at the point where he's personally insulting you if you don't get a party invite. Also perfect GIF usage.

Article on the Vermillion hire: Why hiring a new trainer is a bigger deal than you think

Pertinent excerpts...

Quote

It doesn't take a detective to figure out that some players questioned the efficacy of the Redskins training staff under former head athletic trainer Larry Hess. In fact, anonymously, some players explained they liked the medical staff except for Hess. Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams made it quite clear that he thought Hess was a major problem in his comments after dealing with cancer, so much that he now is open to a possible return to the Redskins since Hess and Bruce Allen have been fired.

As for Vermillion, he comes in with accolades and some question marks too. In 2016 he was named the NFL Trainer of the Year, and he worked for the Panthers the last 18 years. Prior to that, he actually worked in Washington for one season. The biggest questions for Vermillion come with the health of Panthers QB Cam Newton, who lost most of last year to a foot injury and has dealt with a number of ailments over the years.

Still, in NFL circles, Vermillion has a strong reputation. That wasn't the case previously for the Redskins head trainer.
