James Bradberry "I want to be paid a top 5 CB"

Umm Hurney is negotiating his new contract right now.  Guess who the dumb team is going to be?

Since his contract expires soon, I have no doubt that negotiations (or at least player expectation discussions) have occurred. That is is a far cry ( I pray) from approaching an agreement that would pay Bradberry Top 5 CB money.

If he insists on Top 5 money and the Panthers are desperate then franchise him, but do not tie the team to an absurd contract. If I were his agent I would be asking for Top 5 money to try to leverage the current state of the franchise.

Consistently good teams do not fall for the bait. Of course, the Panthers have not been good for some time. Ironically enough, a primary reason for the slow decline can be traced back to letting Norman go for no compensation other that a compensatory pick. That egomaniacal idiocy led to the Panthers reaching for two CBs one of which was  Bradberry.

BTW, I agree that he is the best CB the on the Panthers roster. I disagree that this is a valid reason to overpay him. For scheme reasons or otherwise, the Panthers never placed much emphasis on their defensive backfield under Rivera. It really showed the last two seasons.

He was our best corner, sure.  He was a good corner this year, yes.  He is on a good trajectory, absolutely.

He is not elite.  He is not top 5.

As much as we hated to see Josh Norman go, look what happened.  This defensive system produces "system corners".  Guys who learn to play their assignment, play it well and look really good.  It's good and bad.  You've got a guy who can work in your system, but it makes them think they are worth more than they really are.

Our problem however had nothing to do with defending the pass.  I mean, seriously, if you're going up against Carolina, knowing they give up FIVE YARDS PER RUNNING PLAY it just doesn't matter how good we are against the pass.  Run the ball, stop the run.  We failed at one of the most basic tenets of the game this year, and the football gods frowned.

James Bradberry will not fix that.
