A Solution to the QB Dilemma

If they cut him.  I should have stipulated as high as a 3rd round, any more is too rich.  I obviously would take, say,  a 5th for him...absolutely.  If they cut him, the that would be obviously icing on the cake.   The Bengals will not cut him without entertaining offers first.  We just have to really low-ball the offer.

Secondly, I don't think Dalton is jut going to roll over for a backup role.  He's going to want to go to a team where he at least has a chance to compete for the starter's role.  He would have that here.

He isn't worth adding if he isn't cut and he isn't worth any draft capital. There are going to be quite a few options on the upper end of that journeyman QB scale that can be had for a lot less than $17.7 mil in free agency. I'm 100% behind bringing in a veteran QB as a backup for Cam(assuming we keep him) but not at anywhere near that price and certainly not for any draft picks.

And in what world do you see Dalton legitimately competing with Cam Newton? Seriously.

I kinda figured the "Cam or bust" crowd would hate the idea.  That was the same mentality heading into this year and we went bust.  Tepper is a hedge fund manager and this team got seriously exposed.  I doubt Tepper gets burned twice like that.

I'm the farthest thing from a Cam fan and this idea sucks. Why bring in someone worse than Cam and twice as injury prone.

Why not add Rivers in the mix too?

I honestly thought about it, but he's 38 years old and has been in decline.  While I'm partial to NCSU, it doens't make much sense.  Dalton is only 32 and maybe a chance of scenery would rejuvenate him.  His early years under Marvin Lewis were pretty good.

It's not the Cam or bust crowd, it's the idea of actually trading for a guy that we can do as well or better than by just simply signing a free agent QB for a much cheaper price. Why take a one year $17.7 mil rental veteran QB when you could do the same with a younger or better(or both) option at a much cheaper price? Not to mention not give up any draft picks.

The most reasonable goal should be to keep Cam as the starter for this last "prove it" year of his deal but actually go out and obtain a veteran QB that is actually capable of starting 16 games and winning more than our current ragtag group of third string QB's.

I don't think Rivers would be very interested in coming here. He's got 687 kids in San Diego and is very happy staying there. My guess is that he is unlikely to sign with any other team than the Chargers.

Dalton is even older than Cam and has a 17.7 million dollar cap hit next year.

What exactly is the argument for not keeping our younger MVP quarterback another year if this is the kind of option we are facing? I'd rather just take my chances in the draft.

By two whole years?  We are not talking about 10 years.   Yup, former MVP.  Hasn't looked anywhere near that level since, even when healthy.

Again, Cam or bust.  Great plan.

If I had 687 kids in a city, I would be looking to get out of there as fast as possible.

I wouldn't be opposed to him or Rivers, if they are cut and brought in cheap to be the backup.  No way should Cam have to duel it out.

I almost pied you, but I think competition may bring out the fire in Cam.  If Dalton is such a slouch, then Cam should beat him handily, correct?

Being in Case Keenum to backup Cam Next year.  Then in 2021 draft a QB.

Case Keenum or any number of former starting QB's that will be available in 2020 free agency(which will likely already include Andy Dalton).

If we keep Cam for the 2020 season, we will know whether to move on in 2021(with a new QB) or extend him. It really seems like a pretty simple plan, TBH. If we don't keep Cam for 2020, then bringing in Dalton makes even less sense. At that point you are looking for a young QB in the draft.
