Allen is our back up QB

So what's your plan for the backup qb position? Invest more draft capital when we need to shore up so much of our defense as well as o line, not to mention whoever we draft will naturally have a high bust potential? Get a veteran who will cost 10 times as much and be a marginal upgrade but still not good enough to lead our team to any kind of success if he were to have to play an extended period of time, particularly with the incredibly flawed team we have now?

Allen is a good option while we try to rebuild our team. He's super cheap so we can invest in other areas we need, knows our system and has proven he can win for a few games if he has a decent team around him. With a team this bad, I don't think upgrading our backup qb needs to be one of our highest priorities.

Lol...draft capital is the new buzzword...you are dead on...common sense is the antidote for draft capital...

Our losses are solely because of our qb and not our atrocious offensive line or non-existent run defense? Do you credit Allen when we went 5-1 in his first 6 games or does he only get the blame when we lose and none of the credit when we win?

Do you solely blame Grier for his losses and absolve Allen for his? Yes, you do.

The new coaching staff will have the say in whatever offensive philosophy they decide to go with. They have zero ties to allen and Allen performed uh not good in his campaign this season. He was literally the worst qb in the league. It’s not even about upgrading. Allen is just such a dime a dozen qb talent that the new coaching staff will probably just go with someone they like. This team is about to get a huge makeover. Look across the league and there other other Kyle Allen’s or backups with more potential. I would be very surprised if Allen is on this team next year.

He’s not a solid backup tho. He’s not good.

I disagree - a good backup is someone that can come in and when they have a good team around them, they can put the team in a position to win.

Allen did that.  Once injuries mounted and our defense got figured out, we needed Allen to do more.  We needed him to take the next step to what we would hope a starter could do.  Allen could not.

Huh? I don't know if you are mistaking me for someone else but I do neither of those things. I'm not so black and white like a disturbing majority of the huddle. We looked a lot better with Allen today over Grier but the sample size is still low. I thought Grier was ok, not terrible last week, being his debut. The loss was not on him alone. Allen made a lot of mistakes during the losing streak with too many turnovers, but when we give up 200+ rushing yards and 40+ points, how are we going to pretend the losses are solely on his shoulders?

Kyle Allen was last good when..

- we thought Vernon Butler turned a corner and could start

- I got blasted for saying we should fire Rivera

- we had a historically good defense like the ‘85 Bears

One of Allen's best games was vs the Saints a few weeks ago in the middle of our losing streak.

Allen is a solid backup because when the team around him is good, he contributes to wins.  When the team around him isn't good, he can't carry the team. If he could, we would be talking about him as a potential starter, not as a backup.

If he is the same as others then your argument is lost...not based on talent but coaches preference...this is just about your prference which is fine and should have been your argument...your oerformance reasons pretty much are for starters...the games he won qualify him as a good backup...

Will the 2020 team be much better? Unlikely, ergo, we draft someone.

stuff about new staff

There are definitely other players of Allen's ability out there we could sign to a contract.  I agree.  I do not think Allen is amazing.  But... none of those other players would be as cheap as Kyle Allen.

Grier and Allen will both get a shot in camp, IMO.  We'll see which one has developed more over the offseason - that will be the one that likely stays on the roster, I think.  Perhaps neither will make it though... but b oth will be back in camp.

I don't see why we draft another QB when we have so many problems on our line AND we believe Cam is coming back.

If we don't think Cam is coming back and there is a great QB prospect, sure.  But I'm also not sold on Herbert and I don't think Burrow/Tua will be available.  I'm not a huge fan of any QB after those 2, tbh, but I am not at Hurney's level of talent evaluation ;)

I think we should:

1) Go for OT/DT in the 1st/2nd round,

2) Bring Cam back,

3) Bring in a vet to camp to compete with Allen/Grier/any other QB we bring in.

4) Keep 3 QBs again.
