Between fewer jobs than expected becoming available and the jobs in question possibly looking at either experienced NFL head coaches or college coaches, Jason LaCanfora believes it might be a bad year to be a coordinator looking for a head coaching spot.

That might be bad news for guys like Greg Roman and Kevin Stefanski. Maybe also for McDaniels depending on how you view his stint with the Broncos.

Owners may steer clear of hiring coordinators

Twelve months after teams were scurrying to race one another to hire the next "It guy," competing for the services of a bevy of coordinators who had never been head coaches before, we may see just the opposite occur. After watching guys like Freddie Kitchens, Zac Taylor, Brian Flores, Kliff Kingsbury and Vic Fangio struggle mightily for much of the season, with rookie head coach Matt LaFleur the lone exception – I'd anticipate NFL owners going in a largely different direction this time around.

The closer we get to Black Monday, and the more owners who send signals that they might not be up for a full-scale head coaching search – despite how acute the need for one may be – the more I can't help but wonder if we may not even see a single first-time head coach hired in 2020 (aside from college head coaches who have never done that job in the pros before). With each week it looks more likely there might be closer to six openings rather than the 10 some braced for at mid-season.

Fewer jobs available, overall, with a series of very high profile jobs likely to be among them (like the Giants and Cowboys) that are likely to put a serious premium on past experience, coupled with intense interest in college coaches could lead to a landscape that is particularly challenging for current NFL coordinators on either side of the ball. It's not that difficult to imagine a scenario in which they are shut out entirely, particularly if multiple high-profile college coaches make the leap.

Stefanski's head coaching aspirations had to have taken a mighty blow last night. I can't imagine anyone watching that game and thinking, "Damn, if only we had the Vikings' OC running the show we'd be on a trajectory to win a SB!"

Jim Caldwell and (ugh) Marvin Lewis are both mentioned in this article, though not necessarily as being connected to us.

Would Matt LaFleur be the lone exception if he were coaching any of those other teams?  I can't help but think having a hall of fame QB plays into his success.

Either way, I can't say I'm too excited about any of the names that have been popping up for us.  I don't envy the decision makers in this case.

Only watched a little bit of the first half but from what I saw that offense was Panther-esque. Actually liked Stefanski before this game, now not so much.

I wouldn't mind Lewis as a DC, but not a HC.   If we do bring in an offensive minded HC, we need an almost autonomous DC.  A former DC- to-HC guy would do.  In addition to Lewis, Jack Del Rio comes to mind.  There are some great coordinators that just don't make very good HCs.

The expected head coaching openings per LaCanfora:

Panthers, Redskins (obviously) Giants, Cowboys, Browns and Falcons, although the Falcons could change their minds with a final win.

Teams that are currently considered unlikely to make head coaching changes by insiders: The Jaguars, Dolphins, Bengals, Broncos and Chargers.

The Lions have already said they're keeping Matt Patricia in place.

I mean personally I think kingsbury and flores have done an exceptional job with what they have been handed. Struggling mightly is not the definition of what I would use for those 2 coaches.

As a Wake fan, I say please not Jim Caldwell.  I had to endure several seasons of watching him at Wake.  Can't handle having to do it again for the panthers.  
 

He is one of the most honorable and decent guys in sports, but just not a good head coach.
