Grier's performance

Kyle Allen is younger than Grier. He's had exactly 1 year as a pro because he wasn't even on the team until December of last year. To say we've seen his ceiling based on age/experience is inaccurate in my opinion. Both are young, Both could improve, neither are franchise QBs, but Allen looks more like a backup QB in the league than Grier did. Watching Grier looked like watching Clausen to me, and that gives me no hope for his future.

People are biased against Allen because he's a UDFA, but he's clearly better than Grier and it's not even close.  If the draft statuses were reversed, this would be the consensus.

norv and scott's prize bull.  this is just more rivera failure for hiring buddies.  they got run out of san diego as a tandem and did the same thing here.   this was a wasted pick when we has many other holes to fill

The Carolina Panthers do not have a franchise quarterback on the roster right now. Cam Newton is 6 months away from knowing if he can even play again, Allen is not an NFL-caliber starting QB and Will Grier is a #3 at best, if the team decides to carry a 3rd QB on its roster.

Kyle Allen might develop into a serviceable backup and Will Grier has looked no better than a 5th rounder.

There are no answers on the roster right now.

I respect the grind of completely ignoring Allen’s most recent games and his frequent propensity of mixing awful throws with giving up on a play and going down  a la Jimmy Clausen.

Kyle Allen fans comparing Will Grier to Jimmy Clausen are projecting in much the same way as Republicans who compare any Democrat to Hitler. Sort of firing a projectile at the wrong target.

Put it this way: Kyle Allen has had 13 weeks of being the starter and taking starter reps this year PLUS a whole extra offseason’s reps, and at this point only his most ardent fans can find any way to say he’s the least bit better than a rookie on three days of practicing with the ones. Allen had DJ Moore to throw to and the benefit, if you could call it that, of Shaq Thompson on defense. Grier had to throw to pizza delivery boys and McCaffrey. If anything, he should’ve thrown to him 4-5 more times and pretended DeAndrew White didn’t exist.

I'm not shitting on Grier because I want Allen to be the future of the franchise.

I'm shitting on Grier because he looked like Jimmy out there.

Captain checkdown with no ability to get the ball to WR's. I'd have to look at the all-22 to see if the WRs were getting open, but the throws he did attempt downfield were just... God awful. The one pick to Wright was a huck up for grabs that was just a terrible decision, the second pick deep that should have been thrown inside where the receiver actually was, was horribly thrown outside and in stride with the defender nowhere near the receiver, the third pick he had white running free but underthrew him by a good 5 yards so the defender was able to make a play on the ball because he completely missed the window needed to fit that throw into.

Again, this is not me saying Allen is the future, but Allen certainly looks like a better BACKUP so far.

All things considered ( dog poo coaching, offensive line, receivers ) I think he did ok for his first taste of the NFL. Worth hanging on to him and seeing if he can progress to being a solid backup for years to come.

Why? Because he's local? Get out of here with that nonsense. Next you'll tell me the Hornets should draft UNC kids.

He missed throws downfield but what separates him from Allen is that Allen was throwing to DJ Moore and Grier was throwing to DeAndrew White and Brandon Zylstra, who were getting absolutely no separation.

Mark Schlereth on the broadcast pointed out the lack of separation multiple times (“he’s throwing to McCaffrey a bunch but look here — everyone is covered”). You’re welcome to discount them but Olsen and Fewell both said he made good decisions

Its funny that Grier’s weakness is the intermediate to deep seam throw, which is  a strength of Allen’s, but Allen’s weakness is extending the play, being aware of the rush and moving around in the pocket, which is a strength of Grier’s.

Clausen actually bailed out on plays very early. Allen does the same thing. Grier extends them in a manner similar to Cam. He doesn’t have near the arm, but it was refreshing seeing a guy buy time in the pocket and scramble, then hit McCaffrey for a first on third and long. Haven’t seen that in a while.

Those are all very valid points, and it seems like Allen is better "built" to run this kind of offense with the intermediate throws than Grier. Grier didn't have a prayer on some of those plays as the O-Line was leaking pass rushers before he could even finish dropping back. But credit where it's due, he held onto the ball when he was hit.

trade bait?

Who would trade for him is the question.  Pick up off the practice squad true no risk or giving up of a potential starter.  One reason the team put 3 QB's on the 53 man roster instead of Grier on the PS.

Sadly, all anyone is really doing at this point is arguing the merits of one guy over another when neither will ever start here again after week 17.

I like both guys, I just hate Allen stans, but this has a 2010 temporary vibe to it that ultimately will — and in fairness, probably should — end up with us spending a high (top-2-round) pick on a QB to develop behind Cam.

Grier was drafted as a project with what’s essentially a fourth-round pick and he sorta got the shaft this year, but if you switched him and Allen we’d still be saying a lot of the same things about each player.

    • Who mentioned anything about money? I said they are bad people. When you have that kind of power you tend to be a jerk. It's common that most rich people think they are above everyone else.   It's why these owners always get caught up in some scandal. There are more than we know about trust me. Some pay off people to keep quiet. Hell we already dealt with it with JR. My issue is not with their wealth. My issue is what that wealth brings which can be some evil tendencies...
