Grier's performance

I respect the grind of completely ignoring Allen’s most recent games and his frequent propensity of mixing awful throws with giving up on a play and going down  a la Jimmy Clausen. 

Kyle Allen fans comparing Will Grier to Jimmy Clausen are projecting in much the same way as Republicans who compare any Democrat to Hitler. Sort of firing a projectile at the wrong target. 

Put it this way: Kyle Allen has had 13 weeks of being the starter and taking starter reps this year PLUS a whole extra offseason’s reps, and at this point only his most ardent fans can find any way to say he’s the least bit better than a rookie on three days of practicing with the ones. Allen had DJ Moore to throw to and the benefit, if you could call it that, of Shaq Thompson on defense. Grier had to throw to pizza delivery boys and McCaffrey. If anything, he should’ve thrown to him 4-5 more times and pretended DeAndrew White didn’t exist.

His mobility was very impressive along with his pocket presence, showed he has more upside than Allen. 

like olsen said he’s thrown in a garbage situation, the staff is utter garbage and again a big reason why it was smart to move on from Rivera, he hired too many lackluster coaches, our ST play under him has been atrocious and you see why now

Ummm this was bad. No silver lining in this one. No at least we know, No he looks like a backup, Just the only thing I take from this is draft position. which is a yay.

Say what I said in other threads.. I wasn't to disgusted with him.. Pocket awareness,  and running skills look good.. Has a stronger arm than Allen.. Throwing on the run was way better than I thought it would be.. He needs more seasoning but he actually has a gunslinger mentality and not a game manager.. He can be something with more reps. and game time..

If he can't nail those intermediate throws he'll never any more than a backup QB, at best.  Over and underthrown passes will be picks.

Outside of his ability to maneuver the pocket for extra time. I wasn't impressed.  Indy bottled our running game up and dared him to beat them with his arm. He wasn't even close.

Here is what I saw.  He throws a short pass to cmc or he is sacked, running for his life and throwing on the run.  The body is moving one way and he is throwing the other way and a rookie can’t have good accuracy like that.  Cool we can draft a qb and same thing will happen to them.  What I’m saying offensive Line should be a priority, then we can evaluate what we got at qb.

I hope the coaching staff gives him another look on Sunday and doesn't go back to Allen so quickly. Another full week of practicing with the the 1st team should help out his timing somewhat. 

His pocket presence and ability to extend plays was a welcome sight from what we have seen with Allen. His reads were slow, but he eventually got to it. I don't think Allen would have ever made that read where Grier threw to the corner of the end zone, however Allen would have at least made the throw.

Accuracy was a huge issue. At one point I thought "and people think Cam is inaccurate?". I'm hoping it was just nerves and his timing, but it was pretty bad.

Grier looked the same as he did in preseason. High throws all over the place. 
 

Nice work Hurney. At least you didn’t trade a second rounder for him like you did Armanti Edwards.

I seem to remember a few weeks ago, the narrative was "throw Grier in there because Allen isn't the answer" and some of us were saying "no, he may have potential, let Allen finish this out and fix the OL and defense so he isn't in a terrible situation as a rookie where he'd have to be near perfect to look good". We were ignored or ridiculed.

Cam being elite level, if he were healthy and able to go, would have us looking better. Unfortunately, our defense is so bad that I don't think it would matter if Cam were out there in terms of wins and losses.

Grier played as well as could be expected. Same for Allen. Both have shortcomings that may improve with experience. Moore had a great year and Allen is a part of that. CMC would do well with just about any breathing QB. Grier is getting experience, which is something, but it is not a fair judgment of his potential. Grier and Allen both can't be fairly judged due to personnel issues on the OL and coaching staff.

The question is going to be Cam moving forward and what happens there. You definitely do not draft a QB unless there's a first round choice that you just cannot pass on, which then necessitates that you trade Cam. Bear in mind, I mean a can't-miss, all-but-guaranteed pick. Short of that, you build that damn OL. Do what you have to do to fix that. The rest follows. It is true in most sports. In hockey, you build from the goal out. In basketball, you have to have a strong backcourt. A baseball team is only as good as it's pitching. A football team without a strong OL and DL is bad. The OL and DL is also dependent on coaching and scheme, which makes it mildly different than the other sports but still, it holds true.

he was awful.   i don't think there will be any improvement.  it looks like a wasted pick.  best head back to west bygod virginia and get a job in a toll booth and fug some cousins, but i could be wrong.  we'll see

Kyle Allen is younger than Grier. He's had exactly 1 year as a pro because he wasn't even on the team until December of last year. To say we've seen his ceiling based on age/experience is inaccurate in my opinion. Both are young, Both could improve, neither are franchise QBs, but Allen looks more like a backup QB in the league than Grier did. Watching Grier looked like watching Clausen to me, and that gives me no hope for his future.
