Panthers Beat Writer on the current stage in the HC search

The only place McDaniels should be head coach of is Northeastern Southwest Delaware Tech State A&M.  Yes, he was 11-17 with the Broncos.  That is the good news.  The bad news is he won his first 6, meaning they were 5-17 after that and the Broncos had to bring in John Fox to stabilize things after he was flushed out.  I thought they were going to use real bullets when they fired him.

Keep him in New England, the Pats deserve him.

I'm okay with McCarthy.  Agreed he's not flashy, but substance is better than flash most times.  The one caveat I have is he has to bring in a defensive guru with him.  Green Bay's problem many year under him wasn't the offense, it was their defense was usually garbage.

I'm not a fan of either of the McChoices.

I'm apparently on the mild side of that though. Some folks here are pretty dead-set against either one.

I could at least stomach McCarthy, although I think his tenure with the Packers was underwhelming given the talent.  By our historical standards, though, it would be considered wildly successful.

You know my opinion of McDaniels.  There are two things the Panthers could do to get me to throw up my hands and walk away.  Relocate away from the Carolinas and to someplace not named Albuquerque or hire Josh McDaniels.  If they do either of those, they are dead to me.

No head coach has ever won a super bowl with two teams.

Don't want McCarthy for that reason alone.

McDaniels, I don't know, I have the weirdest feeling about him. I feel like I should HATE the idea of him as a potential coach, but I actually don't.

I think he was young and arrogant in Denver his first go round, and in St. Louis he really didn't have anything to work with in terms of talent other than an aging Steven Jackson. Can't really judge a guy as an OC with Sam Bradford throwing to Brandon Lloyd with his number 1 WR. I think he's grown up a lot since then and he is well respected as an offensive mind throughout the NFL. The dude is apparently the Hoodie's protege, and daaaaaaaaaamn do I want the next Belichick running the show for us. Maybe I just want to believe more than anything, but I would not hate the idea of McDaniels as our HC.

Have we considered any minority coaches to this point?

I'm wondering if we started the coaching search early so we could satisfy the Rooney rule.

If you're not able to make a hire without first interviewing a minority candidate, do you think the early start was in part done to satisfy that requirement and "get it out of the way," so to speak? Then if they find the right candidate later, they can hire him on the spot.

Perry Fewell...

I am assuming that Perry Fewell will get that interview if all we are doing is trying to appease the Rooney Rule. The "early start" in the search meant to me that Tepper was going to be looking heavily at the college ranks and those of experienced NFL HCs that aren't currently coaching this season.

There may be a desire to move outside the coaching trees that currently fill the NFL HC ranks, many producing very little good fruit. Even the Belichick tree seems to produce inferior products.
