Mr. Boone was born in Rocky Mount, NC and there he returned many times to visit after he finished coaching in 1979. He started a program in Rocky Mount that assists people with paying their utility bills and Denzel Washington provided some of the funding to start that program after the movie "Remember the Titans."

One of the more active inner city advocates in Rocky Mount, who happens to be a friend of mine, is married to Boone's cousin. Herman Boone was inducted into the Twin County Hall of Fame some years ago.
