Let's say Grier looks pretty good these last two games

If we see some elite play from Grier, even just flashes, I am certainly willing to entertain the notion of him being a potential future starter for us. 

Not unless he goes the Aaron Rogers route.  Sit, learn, develop and play when he's NFL starting caliber ready.  I'm not saying Grier will couldn't be good down the road, he's simply no where ready now. People must have amnesia because he looked bad, no...absolutely atrocious in preseason.

We fans don't have enough information. 2 games is not enough to know much of anything. At this point all I know is that if Cam can't recover then we need a QB.

Prediction: Grier will have over 50 yards rushing this week.  My rational should be fairly obvious.

If that happened, then he has overcome the first of many hurdles. The problem is and has been the unknown of Cam. Because of that we need more out of the backup because the scenario where they become relied upon full time is a substantial possibility where as in the past, before this year, it was a longshot. it would be a good hurdle to see Grier overcome but that just means he gets a shot next offseason. If he bombs, why would a new coach put his job in Griers hands? I would expect another drafted QB or a journeymen brought in fee agency.

I think we need a vet in camp next year one way or another, and that person ideally ends up starting unless a young guy takes major steps forward.

All the Ron hate is really quite uninformed.

Look, did he need to go?  Yea, he did.  For one reason or another, the situation here just wasn't right for him.  However, that doesn't mean there isn't a place where he can succeed.  Look no further than Andy Reid.  He was fired in Philly despite taking them to the playoffs in 9 of 14 years.  Despite having only 3 losing seasons in 14 years.  And again, I'm not saying it wasn't time for him to leave Philly.

But look at what he's done in a different situation in KC.  Winning seasons every year.  Playoffs 6 of 7 years.  All for a guy who was fired.

His lack of success here may or may not be his fault.  It's possible the situation wasn't right for him.  He may move on elsewhere and fail.  Entirely possible.  It's also just as possible he moves on and becomes the savior somewhere else.

But it says a lot about us as a fan base if we do anything but wish the guy well.  He was a good coach for us at a time when we needed one.  He got us to a SB that with a couple calls and bounces going our way we could have won.  Good luck Riverboat.  May your next stop be successful.

Agreed, but the million dollar question is it Cam or a journeyman FA vet?  I seriously doubt it's both.  In the slim chance that occurs, Grier isn't fighting for a backup role, he's fighting just to land a roster spot.

Two games is enough to know whether he should be given a chance to compete for the backup spot. It's not enough of a sample to simply hand it to him, even if he looks great.

We had this same argument over just one game last year.

As a back up? Of course. Thing is, we drafted him in the third round. We have to risk him looking bad to see what he can do in live action, so that our future coaching staff can do as honest of an evaluation as possible. So, in theory, I’m even ok with him bad, so long as it’s because we are pushing him in what he can do for evaluation purposes.

Really doesn't matter as far as long term. 

It will be nice to see him be able to execute the offense.

If he looks solid these 2 games, you at least have to look into him being a starter going forward.  If anything, it makes the decision to keep Cam on a 1 year deal easier since that would give insurance and give Grier some legit competition in the preseason.  If Grier doesn't look good, then you have to worry about another season being decided by Cam's health and would make it more imperative to get a starting QB in the draft/free agency.

Any QB can look good for the first couple games of their career...there's no tape on them. Once there is and defenses can see tendencies and start anticipating what they do and where they look....the good QBs can handle defenses adjusting to them. The others turn into Kyle Allen.

This.  Nobody has anything to prepare for with Grier at this point.  We can get glimpses of his strengths and weaknesses, and his decision-making, but especially the latter will (hopefully) change over time.  If he has no redeeming qualities, we can probably determine that.  Otherwise, it is just a high level look.

As for Allen, let's keep something in mind, and it may well ultimately apply to Grier.  A backup QB can be counted on to play anywhere from a series to maybe four games.  At that point defenses will have enough film to figure out what they can and can't do.  Any more than that, you really need a former starter or somebody you are trying to develop into a starter.  All you want from a backup is to keep the wheels on.  What you need in a medium-term (or longer) starter is more than that.

A medium-term starter is something I am not sure a lot of teams have.
