Let's say Grier looks pretty good these last two games

There is absolutely no scenario in which I would feel comfortable with that over a 2 game sample size. 

Matt Flynn put up god tier numbers starting garbage time games for the packers all those years ago, parlayed that into huge contracts with the Seahawks and Raiders, then never played again because he wasn't very good.

How many games or how long of a time does it take to determine if a QB may be NFL starting or back up material?

And how do you measure that in relationship with the performance of the O-line and/or whether it is correlated to that O-line performance or not?

How do you know when a QB is off in a few games or on a hot streak if either trend will be more consistent over time to assess their true long term potential?

I'd hate to be the person to decide that..........................and statement posed in this thread title just add another "how do you know" element to this whole situation....

If Newton is gone, you'll have to draft a QB. Unless the plan is to tank for a QB next year. 

Yes but if you base your decision based on one prior event and a different person, is that smart?  You could argue, "We should never draft a QB early because look at Rosen."  Allen seems to be a streaky player, one who is good vs. certain looks, bad vs. others, but he was figured out.  Poor OL play and a weak defense did not help.  Give him a lead and a solid OL, and he is a different player.   However, you need a QB who will not beat you, one that will carry you when needed.

To do as Jeremy suggests would be repeating the same mistakes as last year.  We have to take the best qb we can in the draft.

I don't know it matters to the teams thinking if he looks great va average. I think unless he looks atrocious, hes 2nd or 3rd string next year.  Both he and Allen will at least get a shot in camp to make the team.  For his own sake I hope he blows poo up and looks like a record breaker.  I think stats matter less than how he is playing, what throws hes making, etc.  A lot of Allens weaknesses became clear early.  Sometimes qbs overcome those things and sometimes they dont.  Allen didn't seem to.

I am starting to think if Cam is healthy seeming, we go with either Cam or another vet in camp and our current two backups for next season.  But because the draft happens before we will know how Cam has recovered, we could end up with a new qb drafted.  That could cause Allen or grier to be on the way out, particularly if the team wants a vet backup.

I strongly feel Cam will be the QB next year. Too much potential to be great and worth the $21 mil cap hit. He's going to be healthy enough that they have to give him a try and nobody will trade for him if he's hurt. Both Grier and Allen will be his back ups and it doesn't matter who is #2. It's either Cam or new QB in 2021.

If he lights it up I’ll be at least 1% more excited about next season. That will put me at 1% excited about next season

If he looks good, Grier will be competing with Kyle for the #2 position.  Same as this year although he could have a shot where he was never realistically in competition with Kyle this year. He was #3 from word go with little shot of moving up the depth chart.

This narrative is just plain untrue. Most great QB's have had to deal with garbage OL's at one time or another. As I and many have said over and over, it is the NFL. One of the expectations is being able to make the best of imperfect situations. Kyle has struggled mightily to do that and that is very telling.

That's why I think these last two games can be informative.   To me it is less about stats, much more about how he plays and what throws he makes.

I wouldn't necessarily disagree, however a decent veteran is a welcome safety net. Now, how that will be managed with the costs of said veteran, that may make it quite challenging to accomplish.

If we see some elite play from Grier, even just flashes, I am certainly willing to entertain the notion of him being a potential future starter for us.
