Don't understand estimate Greed. I have before.

I get that football players make insane money, but I'm not going to call anybody greedy for getting the best they can for themselves and their family.

If Newton winds up playing somewhere else, it won't be any sort of betrayal on his part or the team's. It's just one of those things that happens.

Fairy tale endings and the NFL aren't well associated.

Emotion doesn't help, for sure. But as our former coach once said, "sh-t happens".

Who was more of a Panther to the core of his being than Thomas Davis? And he made clear to everyone that he wanted to stay. Money was no issue. Heck, even once said that he'd never play for another team, as I recall.

But again, it's the real world. What people want and what they get are very often different things.

Yeah it sucks, but it's not changing anytime soon.

I wanted to hang onto TD for another season and let Shaq walk without even picking up his 5th year option. Now here we are paying Shaq like an elite LB. Oh wee mayne.

I don't hate Shaq. I think he's a good LB. But he's not elite. Hopefully he will become elite because that's what we're paying him to be.

I would estimate even with two great drafts we are still 3 or 4 years out.

I tend to agree with you.  I would think we could see the playoffs in the 3rd season of a rebuild.  That rebuild could go much faster without Cam on the roster, but you could also build the team like crazy for 3 years, and then not have a good enough QB to make a playoff run.

We are in a bad situation.

(i) Would you pay Cam a fully guaranteed extension?

(ii) I think we are all good with him playing on his current deal but what if he's not?

(iii) Demanding a release and demanding a contract is two different things.

(i) Of course not.

(ii) Too bad for him.

(iii) In this case they are exactly the same, both will result in him being out of the league.

Saw your other comment about "greed"....it is a powerful influence.  That said, nothing Cam can do is going to push Tepper off of whatever path Tepper believes is the best path for the Carolina Football Panthers.

I won't pretend that Allen has played well in the last 7 games or so, but in fairness, the Saints surrounded their backup with a better team.  When the Saints played Seattle, their first two scores were defensive scores, while their offense didn't look any better than ours did in the first half against Seattle.  Seattle had two offensive td's against the Saints total, while our defense gave up three on the first three Seattle possessions.

Backup qb's only win games consistently if they have help from their defense and special teams.  We could have had a very good back, and we would still struggle to win with the worst rushing defense in the league.

The saints are just better team all around for sure. I don't think you really can evaluate any players this year because of just how bad the staff got. Lots of effort issues for sure but also lots of poor coaching. Fans love to blame players but forget they may just be as frustrated as we are.

49ers went from terrible to top of the league in 1 year, and they have an average QB

We don't have to rebuild for 3 years like some are saying

We have a lot of very good core pieces

Yep. We have the best all-around RB in the league. We have the best MLB in the league. We have a young elite WR.

We need to fix the trenches on both sides of the ball, but like you said, we have some very good core pieces that any team in the league would love to have.

Good decisions haven't exactly been our fotrè.

It'd be nice if that changed.

Start another thread on this, but the 9ers and the Panthers are NOT on equal footing with regards to a rebuild.

Well in essence Greed is good for the player but not for the team. I'm sure Matt Kalil has no hard feelings about his deal but the fans do pay for that in more than one way.

Just remember that what was an elite paycheck last year will not necessarily be an elite paycheck this year.  By signing Shaq right now, I think they are trying to get ahead of the market, anticipating certain increases in salary etc.

I agree with this, which is why the only way I would let Cam go, assuming he would play out his 1 year contract, is if he is really busted.  Cam is just as much a risk as the rookies in the next year or two, IMO, again assuming Cam isn't demanding an extension.  Then, get a decent backup and choose between Allen or Grier as the prospect to develop depending on the new coach's scheme etc.  Go for another QB the following year if Cam doesn't work out, imo.  That may delay the return to the playoffs a year if Cam is borked, but it may come sooner if he isn't.
