The number of soccer fans in the world completely dwarfs the number of football fans. It's probably a lot closer in American than you or any other ignorant person making these statements realize.

I personally don't care for soccer, but this is good for the city and Carolinas, and will definitely root for them

“I personally don’t care but I’m going to insult your intelligence and drop some google stats...”

Your name and avatar say humor is familiar to you, but this buttsore Karen post is in direct conflict with that assumption.

Maybe I'm missing something, but am I the only one who thinks this is a horrible investment?  Obviously, Tepper is incredibly intelligent and has the track record that says so...  but, idk, I just don't see the MLS making money here, or in the US in general.

But, I guess if anything it's a positive bc this combined with the practice facility shows Tepper is all-in on the Carolinas for the Panthers long-term.

He doesn’t need the MLS franchise to be profitable

The MLS team is a long term play. MLS isn’t profitable atm, but is consistently trending in the right direction. It is likely to become profitable within a decade seems to be what the informed consensus is. In the meantime any expenses he incurs can be used to offset profits from the Panthers for tax purposes.

Just from him being rich?  Or is this a meta business tactic?  Is it a way to right off Panther's profits to MLS losses?  This is just such a strange statement to me.  If it wont be profitable I cant understand the appeal?

His vision is complete development of that area.  It’s going to be a Tepper Town of fun poo to do. MLS is just a part of getting people to that area. Of course they want the franchise to make money but it’s expected to lose for a while. But he’s going to ultimately benefit from the parking, retail, bars/restaurants, and everything else that will eventually be developed

Baseball is slowly dying and soccer is still on an upward trend in the U.S.  It was the right call for the next sports team to be placed in Charlotte/the Carolinas.  In this fast paced world where the average attention span is getting increasingly shorter, watching baseball is akin to watching mold grow on a loaf of bread.  Weekday games...baseball stadiums are largely empty and even when scanning the fans in the stands, they are on their cell phones or talking to one another.  They don't seem to be attached at all until they hear the crack of a bat and then, right  back to whatever was preoccupying them before.

Ok as a big picture thing it clicks.  I get that.  Kind of flippant, but its definitely in his speculative wheelhouse.  Could pay off or pay off huge.  It'll be interesting to see how much of his vision comes to fruition.

The only thing that is holding MLS (and soccer in general) back is the fact that the quality of play on the worldstage is still mediocre at best.  A country like the USA with all the investments in youth soccer (and the decline in popularity of some other sports) should be able to generate better players. As a Dutch soccer fan (my blood is orange) from Amsterdam (now for 25 years already living in the US) as well as a huge Panthers fan, I would love to see the new team in Charlotte becoming the US counterpart of AJAX Amsterdam (would be great if they could partner with them).

Interesting and eye opening to get this perspective from a non US native living here. I played youth soccer but didn’t stick with it for various reasons. The grassroots potential is definitely there.

I played soccer every year from 5-18 years of age.  While I never got into the Premier League, UEFA, etc... I  did get super-stoked about the World Cup and still even watch it today.  Many kids on my high school team were of various ethnicity and could care less about 'our' football.  They would follow club teams and the national teams from their native countries.  Charlotte has gotten even more diverse since then and it would make sense to cater to that untapped fan base.
