The Carolina Panthers Have Only Drafted 2 Offensive Linemen in the First Round Since 2000. Guess Who They Were??

to be fair, what happened in the two drafts right after that one? Two of the worst in post 2000 panther drafting history, 2009 and 2010 draft classes were abysmal lacking first round picks.

And then Cam was the only player that saved the 2011 draft. That's basically 3 classes worth of picks almost down the toilet totally. That will set your franchise back a long, long , long ways

Stop right there, get with the narrative, Marty knows best!

i call bull poo, it still makes a relevant point IMO. Only 2 times in 19 years did you ever really try to address the Oline in the first round. That's a problem to me.

And why do you think we always constantly get burned way down the field? Because we almost never draft safteys either. :thinking:

I’ve been saying draft a round 1-2 safety for years and I agree. But talent-wise, we hit on those two tackles and unfortunately Otah didn’t last. And Gross held it down 13 of those 19 years. But I’m also not sure being able to say we drafted OTs in round one more often over the last 19 years says much- Who would we have taken? We’ve taken 2 2nd rounders in the last 3 drafts.

The Lt spot wasn’t a need for 13 years. We struggled for 1 year before we got Oher who held it down nice in 2015 and looked like he was good for a few more until the concussion ended his career. Then we’ve struggled again. RT has been a struggle since 2012ish but we’ve put resources at it since 2015 with Daryl then Moton.

Jordan Gross. 2003.

 Jeff Otah , 2008

And you wonder why we have consistently shitty olines.. :eyeroll::eyeroll:

Not drafting one is a big thing. Not trying to fill the other 4 spots on the OL is another. Guess who did it best?

We we’re lucky we had Ryan as long as we did. We were lucky we had a GM and coaching who turned a UDFA into a top money candidate.

Marty Hurney had no reason to spend a 1st on a tackle or center, having drafted Jordan Gross and Ryan Kalil early in his tenture

Jordan Gross remained excellent up until Hurney was fired

By the time Hurney returned for his 2nd tenure, he was strapped with Matt Kalil's massive contract at LT,  and it's hard to fault him for drafting DJ Moore over any of the tackles in that draft.  Not for drafting Brian Burns over all the busts who were taken in the 1st round of the past draft.

Everyone hates BPA but in the first its the way to go. Sometimes the BPA and need match up sometimes it doesn't. Quentin Nelson and Tyron Smith were OUTSTANDING athletes and the BPA at the time and that is why they are still great players in the league.

The Eric Fishers and Luke Joeckels of the world show that unless they are a tremendous athlete, they ain't worth the first.

Thank you for being a good poster! I'm hoping the freak NT is our Bpa, I feel he fixes all of our defense but if not the bronco? You suggested would work as well!

I feel like we just lucked out with Kalil as well, even though he was a third rounder.  Dude was great for most of his career here.  Besides a few good years here and there ( Norwell, Turner, a few others ) we have had nothing but jags on our line for a decade.  Hate Cam all you want but he has been running for his life nearly his entire career.

Kalil was a second round pick and the first center chosen in the 2007 draft.
