On that 50 yard TD to Smith, you see everyone run blocking past the line of scrimmage, don't you think the refs would see that as ineligible recievers down field? I know they do those check offs on some run plays with Smith isolated but the play took time to develop and alot of the lineman were past the los. Just an observation.

Ineligible receiver isn't the LoS it's the Neutral Zone.

Here's the play prior to the snap:

And here's the play as the pass crosses the Neutral Zone with the 5 ineligibles highlighted:

Keep in mind the blue line is an unofficial spot and the neutral zone extends the length of the ball from the spot. Based on these pictures, it's a call that could go either way but a call that usually wouldn't be made. The only time IRD is really called is when the QB throws a pass to an offensive lineman or a screen pass is thrown beyond the neutral zone and linemen go down field to block.

What is more interesting is that if the play was a run play the whole time and Jake audibled out to the smoke pass when he saw the single coverage and somehow Jake and Smitty made the right reads as the defense pursued. Then again it could of been designed from the start, but we haven't seen Davidson pull out that play in the past. The closest thing to the smoke and go was during the playoff loss when Smitty was covered on the smoke route and Smitty adjusted, but was still covered, and the pass was picked off.

What a perfect play that was..We lead the league trying to use that particular game and while it may work have worked in the past, it has been sniffed out a lot lately. The pump fake to the smoke and then hitting Smitty a few yards out is borderline brilliant. Of course the corner will bite on it, now they do that again and the smoke will work the next time. Wasnt that one of Davidson's objectives when he was hired? To get Steve the ball in more creative ways?
