What happened to waiting at least 3 years to truly evaluate a draft pick.  Plus we all know that the large majority of starters are chosen in the first 3 rounds. Lastly while Hurney may not hit on later picks, who exactly does?  Seems to me compared to other teams, the Panthers have drafted better than many teams

He's not though. He's good for 1, that's it. I did a deep dive on it in this thread:

Post that breaks it down by round Here:

It's feast or famine with all of his picks. If the dude isn't an all-star, he's out of the league within 3 years. There's really no in between.

Which fully illustrates why this team is so inconsistent

we have absolutely no depth and rely on a near perfect set of circumstances to field a good team (i.e. a year without injuries and a cake walk schedule).  This is the sole reason we have been nearly average for the last 20 years.

Come on man.  The baseline in round three is that about 12% of them turn in to legit NFL starters.

In his career, Hurney has selected 20 players in the third round.  Among those, Steve Smith, Will Witherspoon, Ricky Manning, Travelle Wharton, Evan Mathis, James Anderson, Charles Johnson, Charles Godfrey, Dan Connor, and Brandon LaFell all started at least 50 games in the league.

So, against a league average of 12% he's hit on 50% of his third round picks.

I really don't know what more you can ask.

Hurney didn't draft Steve and all of those dudes you mentioned were drafted so long ago that they all retired.

The only guys drafted in the past decade worth a damn and still playing are Cam, Luke, Nortman, and Norman, and Norman isn't even good anymore.

DJ Moore is good, and Burns seems pretty solid too, but other than them, it's not looking great.

to not be a poo gm?  i see one lucky hof pick in his first season, and 2 probowlers even though it took tgem many years to develop into probowlers.

how about 2nd round picks?  hes definitely below tgat baseline

how about all the idiot trade ups for the likes of jimmy clausen and everette brown.  Lets not even get into free agency and contracts.   hes a trash gm thats why no one hired him the first time

Which I think is a testament to the teams that were built in the Gettleman Era. Did he draft all world talent? No. Did he find guys that were able to contribute and support the All world talent so they didn't have to do literally everything by themselves? Yes.

Hurney Teams are built like the Kool-aid man. Very top heavy, and if you knock him over he's done for.

So what is the theroy on how he can hit homeruns in the 1st and whiff so regularly the rest of the draft?

Doesn't matter. His contract negotiating skills make up for it...

I mean it’s not so much a theory...as long as you’ve done your homework first round pick should be the easiest one to make.

I’d rather have a GM who nails picks 2-4 and botches the first round myself.

Dumbass Hurney did not draft HOF Agent 89! Get that crap right. Witherspoon and Ricky Manning were good picks but never got a second contract from Hurney. Evan Mathis never succeeded until toward the end of his career in Philly. James Anderson was overrated as hell. Made a bunch of tackles that didn’t make any difference. Connor was a complete bust. When have Panthers fans decided that Lafell and Godfrey are now good? Charles Johnson is the only great pick out of that list.

And I've said before that measuring by how many games players started for the teams that drafted them is a weak standard.

He was on the scouting staff for a coach/GM who only thought Smitty was a return guy..  No w

I'm giving Seifert credit for smitty..

Marty was never on the scouting staff. He's actually never been a scout at any point in his career.

Prior to becoming GM, he was the team's cap manager.

He also was helping with scouting as Beane did under Hurney and Gettelmen.. So once again you're wrong..

    • I'd rather figure out a way to get Howell from Seattle.  I think he would do really well in Canales offense.  I also think Howell would do great with this offensive line. Thoughts?
    • 30 points a game. People were hoping to get 17-21 with Young at Qb. This week will be a tougher defense sure would be nice to eat off their plate.
