Bah. Don't give in to the malaise just yet. The uncertainty of it all sucks but we will get a chance to see the direction in the next few months. Perhaps it will be enough to get back on the horse again and ready to see 2020.

Of course, it could also reveal Dan Snyder 2.0 and a regression towards the cellar dweller franchises.

Let's hope it is the former.

It’s not a choice.  I didn’t decide to not care.  It just happened.  I don’t feel it in my heart anymore and that’s new for me.  If Cam is gone, I think my fandom will flatline.

I thought 2015 was going to be the first of many dominant years to come.

When that didn't happen, yeah it was extremely disappointing.

But now Jerry Richardson is gone. Ron Rivera is gone. Marty Hurney may be gone or have his role reduced. And more.

Next year's Panthers could look significantly different.

I couldn’t care any less who the damn owner is.  However you slice it, it’s just another Uber rich dude I’ve never met with more money than God. Rivera being gone scratched a petty itch.  That’s about it.  I can’t speak on the GM without stroking out.

Yes, they will look different but I can’t say that it will be for the better or that I’ll even care.

When the team has been mediocre to bad, I'll take "different" over that, even if it's unknown.

what we do know is that tepper puts ketchup on steak.  what we can assume is he uses the hotdog water to make his kraft mac-n-cheese.    these kinds of people are strange and unpredictable.   its possible he has a poop knife.   we don't know.

I have to say I can respect this even if I am capable of being more optimistic and still care. Sometimes something just takes all the wind out of your sails and you can't give a poop anymore. For you it's Cam if he leaves the Panthers, for me it was the idea of moving in with the ex who had four dogs and six cats. Once I realized "I don't wanna be the zookeeper, I'm never going to want to be the zookeeper." we were just done.  Once you cross that Rubicon, you ain't crossing back.

I'm open to the possibilities. I hope Cam can come back and I hope he is healthy. There are a lot of moving parts and it's not going to be easy to pull off, if the health thing can be overcome (which I sure would like to see).

My anger with the situation is two fold. First we wasted Cam for the most part to this point with a pathetic philosophy which was fun at the time because Cam was fun and now in hindsight, holy crap do i have issues with what we wasted with what I belive is garbage coaching and player management. Second, i do not relish the thought of the pre Cam days quality of QB. There were a couple of ok to fun years but I wasn't happy with ok when we stoped trying past ok. Which reminds me of the first and it cycles yet again.

The thing with a shoulder that shows arthritic symptoms is it is usually fine for a while, then things drop off quickly as more reps are taken.

That’s a fair point. And that’s the risk. I’ve said in the past and I’ll say it again, this is not a slam dunk decision. I just think many folks are understating his value beyond throwing the ball, while at the same time overstating the amount of capital you would get in return via trade.

His ability to read defenses is highly undervalued. Also: Over 40% of his career runs, designed or otherwise, lead to a fresh set of downs. Think of how many red zone (Goalline) opportunities this team has missed on in his absence. And while I understand his shoulder could take a brutal hit in the open field, that’s just part of his game and where ever he plays next, that won’t change. I think he’s far more likely to get hurt standing in a messy pocket trying to deliver on a deep route.

Turner did a good job of reinventing Newton’s game. More WCO concepts from the route tree, less vertical volume. But, no: at no time was he told to stop running. In fact, he was still running with great success well into last season.

My understanding regarding the shoulder is that some of this damage is irreversible, and will limit his career by a few years. And I definitely understand the arthritis portion of it. But considering he’s just now 30, my suggestion has been to give him at least a few more years to see what he can do with these very talented skill players.

I suspect Newton's people will have a pretty good idea of what he could get elsewhere.

(yeah I know, tampering is illegal and all, but let's be real)

Said it elsewhere: Asking him to play on a one-year "prove it" deal means he assumes all the risk. Another injury and his future earning potential is out the window.

If he knows someone else will offer better than us (like say, "ten different teams") I can't see any reason why he shouldn't pursue that.

I’m not so concerned about what he thinks he should pursue. And I’m not trying to sound like an ass, but he is under contract with the Carolina Panthers. What he can fetch from another team doesn’t mean much to me. I’m looking at what the Panthers can fetch in return for him. And if Tepper is not convinced that he’s well enough physically to be renewed, I would imagine most teams out there would be keenly aware of that reluctance. Which, at least in my view, would drive Cam’s trade value down.

It may not mean much to you, but I'm pretty sure it means an awful lot to him.

And if Newton ultimately decides there's no way he's playing on that one year deal (which he genuinely could) it may come to a point of getting something over nothing.

"Cam is our guy. We are committed to him and will build around him."

Or perhaps...

"Cam is the starting QB of the Carolina Panthers, period."

These were the sentiments of the past 8 off seasons. There has never been a single hint of waivering on Cam, until now.

The latest statement of "Yes we prefer a healthy Cam Newton to start but remains open to trade offers" falls well short of the statements above. It is the first time in Cam's career that it has ever been said. Cam hasn't been fully healthy at the start of the season in quite a while, yet he has always been the unquestioned starter, point blank.

Like it or not, what we are hearing now is a deviation from what has been the norm in the franchise's stance on Cam, historically. These nuances in language are significant. A "healthy" qualifier. Open to trade? That's new.

Will Cam be a Panther in 2020? Possibly

Will he be traded? Possibly

Could he fail a physical? Possibly

Could he hold out? Possibly

This is the entire point. Cam's circumstances in Carolina are a complete unknown for the first time in his entire career. There are so many variables at play that absolutely nothing would surprise me. To pretend otherwise is just wishful thinking.

  Reveal hidden contents

This thread will be full of irrational and emotional hatred to anyone that says cam may not be here next year.

I don't see anything in this post that should be surprising. There are simply too many unknowns to make a definitive statement right now and the Panthers are smart not to paint themselves into a corner.

Two questions have to be answered before any reasonable, rational decision can be made.

1. Do the Panthers believe Cam is healthy enough to be the QB1 for multiple seasons? I say multiple, because that is the ONLY way the Panthers would be willing to invest in Cam. Forget 2020, the plan has to be for the next 3-5 years, because there is little to no chance the Panthers are a contender next year.

2. Who is the next coach/GM? It would be silly to promise Cam QB1 without input from the coach/GM. Until they are hired, we won't know the real direction of the franchise.

So, we wait.

    • I'd rather figure out a way to get Howell from Seattle.  I think he would do really well in Canales offense.  I also think Howell would do great with this offensive line. Thoughts?
    • 30 points a game. People were hoping to get 17-21 with Young at Qb. This week will be a tougher defense sure would be nice to eat off their plate.
