Pats tape shows 8 minutes of Bengals sideline footage

I'm all for hating the pats...but I'm not sure I'm following the outrage.

Are the camera crews supposed to not record anything going on on the opponents sideline? Aren't they going to be inadvertently recorded every time you're taping a play, and there's already a zillion cameras recording everybodies every movement on the sideline at all times during games. Coaches cover their mouths when they're talking on their mic's because they know their every move is being watched and recorded...

Yet it took this long for someone to find out.

I won't argue they were idiots to engage in this kind of behavior again, but that crew up there is so arrogant they probably thought they could get away with it.

(darn those meddling kids)

So long as they're caught and punished, how long it took for someone to catch-on is irrelevant.  Being known as a cheater for your entire career, having wins vacated, and other major punishments is not worth the risk of violating the rules again.  Taking that risk is not brilliant considering the potential consequences.

It's not brilliant.  They easily got caught, and it's incredibly stupid given they were previously caught and punished by the league for filming the exact same thing.  This isn't a genius cover to find a way to do it another way.  The promotional or documentary filming of an opposing team's sideline and signals is still filming.  The predicate reason for filming the same does not change the content of the film, which is clearly against the rules to do. The Patriots organization sanctioned and encouraged a documentary series that illegally films an opponent's signals.  The Patriots organization has access to this film.  Whether you believe they looked at the film or not, it is incredibly stupid, and especially egregious considering their history of committing the same violation.

As far as we know, the Patriots do not have access to the film, but they could have if it had gone undetected.

The Patriots deserve to be punished, because this broke rules whether there was intent or not. But I am skeptical this particular web series was an evil plot to steal signals.  The other videos shot earlier in the season, the ones I saw were all at internal locations etc.  Nothing about scouting sidelines.

I've seen it from a couple of different sources. I'll look it up here in a bit but I believe part of that came from the Patriots response. They explained that this was a web series they were doing and in fact already had several episodes on their site.

The video series was not just about scouting other teams.  There were multiple parts about different areas of the Patriots organization.  A couple of other are things like nutrition and athletic training staff.  There was one about college scouting too.  I can't find any other ones that were shot outside of Foxboro (if even in a stadium) but I also don't have any interest in watching hours of garbage put out by the Patriots.

Well remember, if the whole thing is just a ruse, all they have to do is put up a couple of episodes to make it look credible.

It could also be that the video series was legit but additionally served as a way to film signals and such.

Same result either way.

This has been going on for months (year+ maybe?) and has had what looks like a huge amount of money put in to filming and editing and production.  I saw at least 5 videos listed dating back some time and I didn't bother to look for more.

There is no way this entire video series is a ruse to steal the fuging Bengals hand signals, lol.

But I wouldn't doubt Belicheck would take advantage of any film that those crews just happened to bring back...

It doesn't have to be though, does it?

Like I mentioned, the film series could be legit, but even then they could use it to slip some people into the stadium and film signals. Heck, the film series being legit actually makes a better cover.

Given the incredible risk and past scrutiny, I don't buy Belicheck's master plan to acquire the Bengals hand signals was to use an independent contractor filming a TV series for them, approved by the home team.  As much as we all may hate him, he can't be that stupid.  But we'll see as more comes out.  There's no way some random contractor will show extreme loyalty to the Patriots if they really instructed them to break league rules.

As far as we know the Patriots did have access to the footage, actually.  The series is on their website for crying out loud.  You think they would film their organization and not maintain the authority to review the footage?  At the very least for the sake of protecting trade secrets and confidential player health information. And it doesn't matter if the web series had other content.  All it has to do is have any content filming an opposing teams sideline or attempt to do the same, at any time.

Do you think the Panthers never reviewed all the footage obtained for All Or Nothing?  Do you think the Panthers just blindly trusted the production company filming the series not to release trade secrets or confidential HIPAA information on their players?

It's not a matter of stupid.

It's a matter of arrogant.

Some people believe they can get away with anything. Would it really surprise you to find that out of Belichick?
