A look into the Panthers future - Spoiler alert

Hello there and thank you for visiting the Huddle.

Last night I performed a ritual that allowed me a glance into the Carolina Panthers short term future. The ritual was performed by drinking spoiled goats milk out of a commemorative Super Bowl 50 beer stein while simultaneously forcing myself to re-watch every moment of the Panthers at 49ers game. This put my body into such a state of disappointment and disgust that I was transported into early 2020.

The following is an account of what I witnessed.

New Coach

The Carolina Panthers hired Kevin Stefanski as their new head coach soon after the Minnesota Vikings were eliminated from the playoffs. Stefanski fit perfectly the mold that Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was seeking in a new head coach. An offensive mind that is open to new practices in analytics but still seasoned enough to have the old school football mentality. Stefanksi was extremely excited to have an offense with legitimate play makers at skill positions to work with as head coach. The biggest question would be quarterback.

Cam Newton

The Carolina Panthers and Cam Newton were at an impasse. Newton was unwilling to play a season with only one year left on his contract. The Panthers were unwilling to extend Newton over concerns about his foot but also his shoulder. The franchise was not willing to gamble a third consecutive season on Cam's health and lose again. No blame could be placed on either party as they both wanted what was best for themselves. The Panthers sign-and-traded Newton in return for a 2nd round selection in the 2020 draft and a third round selection in the 2021 draft. Newton got a multi year contract and the Panthers got at least something in return.

The NFL Draft

In an amazing turn of events, LSU Quarterback Joe Burrow drops to to #5 as the Dolphins opt for Tua. The Panthers use picks to trade up from 7 and grab Burrow. Burrow becomes the day one starter with Will Grier as his backup. The rebuild is fully on and jump started by grabbing the next franchise QB of the Carolina Panthers.

The rest of the draft focused heavily on the offensive and defensive lines with of course Hurney reaching in the third round for an unathletic safety.

Do not flame me for the things I write for they were not of my own cognition. They were a vision implanted by the football gods themselves. Now, go ye and be merry, for although the darkest days are ahead, a new hope will soon arise.

Love,

JI

As it turns out, my cousin's, sister-in-law's aunt is a fifth generation gypsy, who has a penchant for the NFL. She related this scenario to me...

1. The Panthers and Cam work out a 5-year contract that really ends up being a 3-year deal with options. Cam wants to stay in Charlotte and Tepper realizes his value on and off the field.

2. The Panthers DO trade up in the draft, but that is simply to enable them to draft Derrick Brown, DL Auburn. It costs them a 3rd this year and a 5th next, but with their history of 3rd round picks...

3. The Panthers hire Kevin Colbert as GM and Greg Roman as coach. None of the assistants are retained.

Don’t know anything about goats milk but I was drinking some 109 proof Private Select out of my Panthers mug I got on Amazon and I saw the following;

Cam wearing a Bears jersey running for 150 against our defense

Ron Rivera wearing a cowboy hat

Kyle Allen starting game 1 in 2020

Understand, "taking a hiatus from NFL" in 2020......

Even if they draft a qb bro, that doesn’t mean he will get thrown to the fire. In the end KA had a 5-0 record in the NFL until injuries piled up... if only people gave him the same benefit of the doubt they gave Cam.... I could very well see us going LT top ten or WR and taking the gamble this year with Allen... in the end Short and Poe getting hurt is why we can’t stop a nosebleed... we had one of the top defenses in the league before SF...

If he gets bounced by OSU I could see it. If he wins the NC he’s going #1

I don't think his performance in the playoffs is going to hurt or help him much unless he puts up some insane outlier performances.

Scouts don't really care about the things that sports talk bobble heads do.

Panthers fans that want Cam gone can't have it both ways. You can't say he is unequivocally washed up yet think teams are going to line up to ship us an early pick for a soon to be 31 year old quarterback that we've given up on. That decreases his value substantially not even mentioning the looming health questions.

If you get what you want the odds are 2020 will be another lost season.

    • Well, I'll be damned. Good call bro. 75 yards up the creek from the house. A big chunk of the creek bank let go and slid off into the creek. It looked like maybe 6-8 feet of dirt on top of bedrock and once saturated it basically slid off of the bedrock like a playground slide. I'll post up pics when I can upload.
    • His azz dawged it last night...collected a check...happy that ho is gone...
    • Look I get you are wait and see on Canales and that's perfectly fine but comparing him to Rhule is off base brother. And I do not see significant similarities to the Arizona win from 2021. They honestly are strikingly different. All you have to do is dig into the numbers. Our starting QB that game was PJ Walker who had 167 passing yards on 29 attempts with no touchdowns and one INT. Cam attempted 4 passes for 8 yards. Not one single passing touchdown in that blowout win. By comparison we had 166 rushing yards and one of those touchdowns was Cam's "I'm back!!!" run for a score. Looking at that game obviously it was a mirage and not sustainable because it is a passing league. If that game compares to any other I would say it would be the Lions win with Wilks. Now look at the Raiders win. 319 passing yards 3 passing touchdowns 114 rushing yards from Chuba 1 rushing touchdown from Miles Sanders. That's a balanced offense. That's what we've been asking for going on years now. But I will agree with you they absolutely do need to prove it wasn't a one off and build from that win. I'd love to see it. We'll just have to wait and find out.
