The Shaq contract pretty much confirms Tepper is JR 2.0

OP is right about one thing; half measures are dumb and this organization has operated on stringing half measures together time and again even though it continues to prove that it does not work and results in organizational dysfunction

when john fox’s contract was up it was a new opportunity to start fresh and bring in a better GM but hurney was kept. when 2012 ended up being a dumpster fire hurney was dismissed and ron stuck. and last week ron was fired seemingly due to compatibility issues with the owner, yet he still let hurney stick around, bc apparently trading your 2nd round pick for armanti edwards is the mark of a good talent evaluator.

Arguably Shaq's greatest asset is his versatility. He can play 4-3 OLB, 3-4 ILB, and even big nickel/box safety in 5/6 db sets. You can argue on the merits of the contract if you want, but the timing is a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. And I wonder if Hurney actually wanted to get ahead of the free agent market, where teams with $100 million in cap space are primed to throw insane amounts of money around and reset the market on traditional contract values.

Thank you for something other than %%#$#^ Hurney and Tepper butt hurt whiny outrage.

Some deals look high at first but three years in, not so high (look at Cam's deal, it is dirt cheap, relatively). It does seem like a lot, today, but you know, if I know want something I am not sweating a little higher price especially if I feel like I am going to get good use out of it.

Aside from the evaluation of him as a player and the fact that we don't know what they have planned, the market IS getting ready to move. Do I know the extent of it? No. But next year is the last year of the current CBA. That has ramifications that I don't fully know but I do not doubt for a second that the people in the organization are on it. One thing we can bet the house on, contracts are not going to get cheaper.

Bunch of whiny brats on this board. The cap is going up again next season and we have a ton of free agents, so there's no need to cry this hard over this. The only annoying thing in 2020 will be Matt Kalil still eating up nearly 5% of our total cap.

Basically a mid level starter so yeah, annoying.

I was thinking we could keep him for around 9 or 10. I am guessing this signals that Hurney expects the cap to jump significantly with the new CBA and Tepper agrees. Not sure I agree completely but in the interest of not looking foolish later I’m not publicly betting against the billionaire this early.
